THIS is Batman Forever
By Amazon Customer
If the movie was like this book then things would be much different. It's darker, makes you sympathize with Dick Grayson, solves Bruce's Red Book dilemma, and makes Chase Meridian seem a whole lot more intelligent. I wonder how things would be if they cast different people in the roles of Riddler and Two-Face. Well I was picturing the Batman: The Animated Series version of the characters and it made me wish this book was made into a Batman Forever 2.0 if you will. Read it!

Okay
By Kelly Schwickrath
I'm enjoying this book mostly because of the additional information it offers on the characters. Batman Forever is a guilty pleasure of mine, and I enjoy movie novelizations, so I thought I might like this one. The writing is a little over the top sometimes, especially in the intro flashback to Bruce's dash through the rain. I find myself rolling my eyes here and there. Overall it could have been better. But it's alright.

With a bit of self-discipline, this program really works!!
By Learning All The Time
I used this book several years ago, maybe three, and it was so helpful. It is much more than a pep-talk, it is a specific how-to manual that gives you concrete ideas about the steps you must take to lift yourself out of your slump/minor depression.

First, you have to get a handle on whether you are depressed (it could be something else making you blue), and how severely you are depressed. The book is designed for people whose depression scores are between 5-15 on the Beck scale (provided). If you are higher than 15, the author recommends that you give the book a try, but keep in mind that you MAY need professional assistance. I was a 23, but this book worked wonders for me, without any assistance.

The book has a behavioral approach to depression. This means that the authors believe your depressive behavior and feelings can be changed by first identifying/focusing on antecedents (what precedes your behavior or feelings) and consequences (what follows a behavior). The next step is to consciously change the antecedents and consequences of your behavior, rewarding yourself as you do so, and thereby slowly and steadily lift yourself out of depression.

A behavioral focus also means that this book will not help you analyze how you got started in your depressive behavior patterns. The authors believe it is not necessary to dig through all that stuff that in order to change yourself.

So in a way, this book is the antithesis of "talk therapy" -- I'd call this "do therapy".

The authors acknowledge that there are multiple roads to depression, that every depressed person has a unique set of problems. However, many of these problems can be lumped into broad categories, each of which is given a chapter clearly explaining strategies for improving your skills in that area. The strategy chapters include: "Learning to Relax", "Pleasant Activities", "Learning How to Be Socially Skillful", "Using Your Social Skills", "Controlling Thoughts", and "Constructive Thinking".

For my bout of depression, the two chapters I needed to focus on were "Pleasant Activities" and "Constructive Thinking".

The idea behind "Pleasant Activities" is that you are depressed because most of your interactions with your environment do not have rewarding outcomes and/or have dissatisfying, unpleasant, or distressing outcomes. So, to change your depression, you need to change the balance so that you get more positive than negative payoffs from interacting your environment, every single day.

I actually had to rate a list of 320 activities (provided) with how pleasant I found them and how frequently I was able to do them, and then use that to create an activity list with 100 things I like and am able to do. I added a few of my own that were not included in the list. Then I had to make a daily plan that made time for several of those activities every day, and I had to chart my daily mood so I could see if I felt better when I did more of those activities.

This was incredibly valuable to me, and highly effective. When I start feeling depressed I want to hole up and sleep, doing only the most "necessary" activities (which often tend to be quite unrewarding - dishes, laundry, etc...). The authors insist that you do activities you LIKE to do, regardless of their actual utility.

For me, my list includes things like carve stamps, write reviews on Amazon, watch Voyager episodes, make stuff with beads and/or fabric, talk on the phone with a friend, etc... When I feel that slump coming on, it is too easy to view these activities as TIME WASTED, something to beat myself up about. The thing I now keep in mind is that the small things that energize me and make me happy are actually IMPORTANT in and of themselves, just because I like to do them.

"Constructive thinking" was also very helpful to me, because I realize that I have these ongoing monologues in my head that are very critical and very hurtful -- I say things to myself I would NEVER say to my children, things that I know would be devastating to say to children -- and yet, I listen to myself say horrible thing after judgmental thing after critical thing to myself!!

Well anyway. It may sound like this book has a simplistic view of depression, but actually, I think it is quite well rounded. It provides the framework for an action plan to combat depression, but you fill in the details.

There are a few potential problems with this book. First, you have to know yourself pretty well in order to use the book. You have to know what actually rewards you, what your strengths and weaknesses are. You have to be able to assess yourself with the tools the book gives you. Some people may need help to do this.

The second issue is that it takes a fair amount of work to set up these monitoring and behavior programs for yourself. It takes a fair amount of self-discipline to keep following through (although you are supposed to be rewarding yourself for the steps you take). Some people may need help to do this.

Finally, I think that some people's brains may not be wired to think in quantitative terms. I tried to explain the "Pleasant Activities" list to another friend who felt depressed, and she was aghast. She said she could never rate activities, that her brain didn't work that way. So if she wanted to try this book, she would probably need help to work through it, to think about her problems in a behavioral, quantitative way.

For me, I think this was a little easier because we used ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) with my son years ago when he was 3, so I was very familiar with the concepts driving this book, and quite experienced with the work involved in keeping up behavioral programs.

Oh, one more thing, this book directly doesn't address existential dispair. But to my way of thinking, even people who are agonized over world events or "what it all means" -- these people still have to live in and interact with their environment. The more rewarding those interactions are, then, at least for me, the less crushing the "big picture" things become. And in fact, if you can get beyond despair and hopelessness, you might actually become an instrument for change, you might actually be able to do something meaningful about other people's suffering, to somehow put your compassion and angst into action.

Well anyway. That's my 2 cents about this book, for what its worth. I loved it, I credit it with preventing my downward spiral and bringing me back in touch with some of the things I need to do in order to enjoy and appreciate life.

Very helpful!

A counselor told me about this book about 20 years ago. I have turned back to it many times. It has very helpful information about cognitive behavior. It has a workbook type format section that can also be helpful. I have used it when I was having problems with anxiety as well. Truly, it has been a godsend for me over the years. It has been especially comforting during life crises.

Freedom: My Book of Firsts, by Jaycee Dugard

In the follow-up to her #1 bestselling memoir, A Stolen Life, Jaycee Dugard tells the story of her first experiences after years in captivity: the joys that accompanied her newfound freedom and the challenges of adjusting to life on her own.

When Jaycee Dugard was eleven years old, she was abducted from a school bus stop within sight of her home in South Lake Tahoe, California. She was missing for more than eighteen years, held captive by Philip and Nancy Garrido, and gave birth to two daughters during her imprisonment.

A Stolen Life, which sold nearly two million copies, told the story of Jaycee’s life from her abduction in 1991 through her reappearance in 2009. Freedom: My Book of Firsts is about everything that happened next.

“How do you rebuild a life?” Jaycee asks.

In these pages, she describes the life she never thought she would live to see: from her first sight of her mother to her first time meeting her grownup sister, her first trip to the dentist to her daughters’ first day of school, her first taste of champagne to her first hangover, her first time behind the wheel to her first speeding ticket, and her first dance at a friend’s wedding to her first thoughts about the possibility of a future relationship.

This raw and inspiring book will remind readers that there is, as Jaycee writes, “life after something tragic happens…Somehow, I still believe that we each hold the key to our own happiness and you have to grab it where you can in whatever form it might take.”

Freedom Fly Me to the Moon
First time I flew in the plane I was six years old, and my mom had a boyfriend that was a pilot. I remember it was a little plane and I threw up. It wasn’t the most fun I ever had for sure. I never flew again until eighteen years later, after my rescue.

The first time I flew in a big plane I was worried that same feeling of nausea would come back from my younger days. The chance to fly in a big plane far outweighed any fears I had, though, and I was looking forward to this new experience. I didn’t want to think about being sick. I just wanted to fly!

Having a lot of time on my hands in the prison of Phillip and Nancy’s backyard, I had a lot of time to dream and fantasize. One fantasy I had was having the ability to fly like Peter Pan. Often dreaming that with a little fairy dust I could fly myself home—Poof! . . . Tinker Bell, where are you? I would cry. But she never came.

I also imagined myself flying from city to city as a flight attendant one day. I thought it would be so much fun to see the world in this way. From London to Paris. Rome, Italy, Egypt. I have always wanted to see the pyramids. I did get to see the Mayan ruins on a trip to Belize. A group of us went to help a tiny village called Monkey River rebuild after the devastating hurricane that they were still recovering from. While there, we explored a pyramid called Altun Ha which means “stone water.” It was amazing and so big. Climbing to the top I felt like a queen. But I digress. I will tell you more of this story later.

This trip was to be my first meeting with Nancy Seltzer. Our need for protection from the media was an obvious priority from the beginning of our recovery. We needed the time to focus on each other and not the constant hounding of the media we were experiencing. Some people wanted to help, and we got involved with one in particular that we thought we could trust. It didn’t end up that way, and we didn’t know where to turn for help after that.

Rebecca wanted to help but had her hands full with not only our therapy needs but also dealing with all the agencies and law enforcement involved with the court case against Phillip and Nancy Garrido, our captors. Her brother-in-law, an actor, knew of our plight and suggested a woman that he trusted in the business of public relations. Rebecca passed this information on to me and, together with my mom, we contacted Nancy Seltzer and explained our story. We asked for her help and, thankfully, she agreed and the rest is history. She did what she said she would and protected us from the media and those who were seeking to exploit us.

On the day of my first flight, we were actually met in the airport parking lot by a security guard and taken through a special way to avoid any press that was lurking. My story was still new then and in high demand. I was accompanied on this trip by my mom and therapist Rebecca.

Once we boarded, I remember the flight attendant asking me if I was old enough to be sitting in the exit row. How funny she would ask, I thought. She said I looked like I was fifteen. No, I replied, I’m thirty! She was shocked. I don’t look my age, apparently. Still don’t to this day. The other day I was in Costco. They had the food samples out. I went to take one that looked like a health drink, and the lady at the booth stopped me and said, “You have to be over eighteen to drink that.” What? Hello . . . I’m thirty-five! I also went to a wedding once and during the toast I was served Martinelli’s sparkling apple juice instead of Champagne! I had even put on makeup! Come on, people, I am a grown-up! Anyways, I’m wandering again. The flight attendant did let me keep my seat.

Over the speaker system “Fly Me to the Moon,” by Frank Sinatra came on. I looked at Mom, who was sitting beside me, and we shared a smile. Fly us to the moon, Frank, this is our song! That actually helped me to relax. Until we started to accelerate and actually take off. My hands and fingers dug into the armrest. My mom asked if I was okay, and with gritted teeth, I answered “Yep.” Turns out, I was okay for the entire trip. I did some deep breathing and looked straight ahead the whole way. Landing made me queasy. I knew I had to take an airsickness pill next time. Rebecca recommended Dramamine. I have taken it ever since, and flights have become so much easier. I have also found a homeopathic remedy, MotionEaze, that works for me on short flights.

Nancy picked us up from the airport herself. Meeting her was like meeting an old friend. One that felt like I had known forever. Actually, with all the talks we had had over the phone up to that point, I really did feel like I already knew her and, most importantly, like I could trust her. So when we met face-to-face that day it felt comfortable. I knew she had our backs and would do all she could to protect me and my family from the prying eyes of the media. Her two beautiful dogs sealed the deal as they greeted us excitedly in the car. I knew right then she was a friend for life.

Later, getting to know Nancy, we decided she needed a nickname. Funny how a certain name can follow you. “Nancy” is that name for me. Although there has only been one “Bad Nancy,” the new Nancy in my life wanted a name that didn’t remind me of the old one. She said as a child she had had the nickname of Nanny Goat for her way of taking care of everyone she loved. So she became my Nanny Goat in more ways than one.

We stayed with Nanny Goat a few days. She introduced me to some people that would become very important in my life. One of them was Michael, who would take care of my finances, and another was Dale, who would represent me and my daughters in our lawsuit against the state. Our stay was very productive and a whole new experience of meeting people for me.

The flight back home was scheduled for nighttime, and we were a little late getting to our gate for the flight. As we walked through the tiny airport, I suddenly heard our names over the speakers. “Terry Probyn, Jaycee Dugard, Rebecca Bailey, please proceed to your gate.” Rebecca looked scared as she ran ahead to ask them to stop. (Remember, the press was still hounding us. That very day a reporter from a tabloid had gone by Rebecca’s house and asked where Rebecca was. The reporter told her fifteen-year-old who answered the door that he was with the FBI and needed to find her.) Guess what happened at the airport. No one even looked twice as our name was repeated over the loudspeaker again and again. Funny how I could be in plain sight and no one noticed!

I remember that day on the flight home, sitting there holding my mom’s hand as we took off, and she said, “Look out the window.” I said, “No I can’t.” I didn’t want to be sick if I turned my head to look, and it was scary being so high up from the ground. My mom promised me I would like what I saw. I turned my head and opened my eyes. I realized I didn’t feel sick, so I looked out a little more and I saw diamonds twinkling, shining bright, but not in the sky. They were below me. Beautiful sparkling diamonds on the ground and me looking high above them. I forgot to be scared in that moment. I had never seen such a magical display of twinkling lights, even more brilliant than the night sky. From then on, I couldn’t wait for my next flight. I still have to take Dramamine, but I enjoy flying more because I remember those twinkling diamonds. Happy memories help when you’re afraid. I always try for a window seat so I can look out over the world. I never get sick of the sight.

I’ve been on many flights now and I’ve even flown all by myself. The first time I flew by myself was actually a pretty fun adventure, even though I didn’t think it was at the time. For a while the thought of traveling alone was really scary. What happened if I got lost? What if I got on the wrong plane and ended up in a strange city? What would I do then? My mom and sister encouraged me to try it but only when I was ready. My sister, again the little one teaching the older one, told me it would be fun to travel alone. She thought I was more than capable of handling any situation that came up. Encouragement like that is what helps the most in new situations and adventures.

I got the chance to take this advice and encouragement sometime later. I was coming back from a visit to my sister’s house. My mom was staying a few extra days, and I was planning on going on my first solo flight. I felt ready to face this new challenge.

The flight had a layover in Dallas. I had been on layovers before and knew the routine. The plane was late taking off, so I knew I had to run to my next flight when we landed. To prepare myself, I studied the magazine with the layout of the airport in it. I knew from previous flights that Dallas was a big airport with trains to take you from terminal to terminal. The first time I was in the Dallas airport the group I was traveling with got on the wrong train, and we ended up across the airport with five minutes to spare before our next flight. I was not going to do it again, especially not by myself! The man next to me saw me looking at the terminal layout and offered some helpful suggestions and helped me plot my course to the assigned gate. I was thankful because I would have been too shy to ask for help.

As soon as I was able to disembark, I ran for all I was worth to the gate assigned to my flight. I had checked my luggage, so I just had my purse and made good time. I even had to navigate the dreadful train. I finally made it to the correct gate only to find out that the gate had been changed! What the?! I ran to the next gate only to find out that my flight had been delayed anyway. Relieved but out of breath, I sat and realized that I needed to charge my phone because I had 10 percent power left. I walked to find an outlet to charge my phone. It was around 10:30 at night and my flight was rescheduled for 11:15 p.m. I thought I had a few minutes at least to charge my phone. (Why are iPhone batteries always running out when you need them the most?)

After charging for a bit, I decided to head back to my gate. Walking back, I became a little worried because the airport seemed deserted and some areas had cots out. Upon reaching my gate I saw there was nobody at the desk, actually nobody anywhere. Oh no, what should I do? I thought to myself, Don’t panic. You can handle this. Like Dory says, “Just keep swimming, just keep swimming.” I walked a few gates down and finally found somebody at a desk. I said, “Excuse me, but my flight was delayed and now there’s nobody there. What happened?” She said, “Oh, the flight was canceled.” Just like that, like it was no big deal. I’m in Dallas–Fort Worth and my flight has been canceled! I’m alone in some strange city airport! And where in the hell was my luggage? I felt like I couldn’t handle it. But I knew there was nobody else to handle it for me. I was on my own and it felt . . . different.

I said, “Well, what am I going to do?” She didn’t really answer me and acted like she didn’t know. I didn’t really know if I should repeat my question or just continue to stand there. As I stood there, she handed me a bunch of papers she had printed out. She called them vouchers. She explained that one was for dinner tonight in the airport (even though all the stands had closed for the night) and a taxi ride to the hotel. I’m thinking to myself, Oh my God, I’m going to have to go to a hotel by myself and take a cab ride! She went on to say that there was one for another cab ride back to the airport in the morning, one for breakfast, and a voucher for a standby flight. I took the tickets from her and walked to the exit.

Looking up at the airport exit sign felt like a turning point. “Exit your old life,” it seemed to say. “Exit now and become . . . what?” Okay, I said to myself. Just keep swimming. I have never been so scared in my life . . . Well, that’s not true. I had never been in this kind of situation before was all. It felt scary and new and different. Sometimes I have to remind myself what I have been through. People tell me I am strong, brave, etc. To be honest, I usually just tell myself I am lucky. How funny is that to think I’m lucky after everything I have been through.

But on that day I did not feel lucky at all—just annoyed, frustrated, tired, and a little scared. I left the relative safety I felt in the airport and entered a hot, muggy unpredictable night. It was past midnight by this time. I didn’t know what I was supposed to do really, but luckily, there were a few taxis still outside at that time of night. I peeked in the open window and told the driver I had vouchers for a cab ride to this hotel in downtown Fort Worth. He said, “I can take you” in a heavy foreign accent. Okay, I told myself, this is going to be okay. Just stay alert. Be present. Stay in the moment. All things I had learned from Rebecca.

After what felt like hours of riding in a stranger’s cab, I thought to myself, Where is he taking me? Does he know where to go? Is he taking me somewhere to rape and kill me? In reality, though, the ride to the hotel was probably no more than twenty-five to thirty minutes. I gave myself permission to have all these thoughts because I felt like if I thought about all the things that could happen, then they wouldn’t. It’s the things you don’t think about that get you. Of course, nothing of the sort happened, but can you blame me for thinking of all the worst scenarios that could? How much bad luck can a girl have, though, right?

We arrived at the hotel. The cabdriver turned out not to be a serial killer but a very nice man. He asked if I would be returning to the airport in the morning and I said yes. He gave me his number and said to call when I was ready and he would pick me up. I thanked him and left the sanctuary of the cab to enter the jungle of a strange city. Well, it wasn’t quite the jungle, and it actually felt pretty safe. I walked the few steps and entered the still brightly lit lobby of my hotel for the night. I showed the desk my voucher and they gave me a room. I navigated my way to the elevator and was relieved to have already learned how to easily find my hotel room. Room 202 so that would put me on the second floor. Wipe the sweat from my brow for figuring that out.

By the time I reached my room, I had to go to the bathroom something fierce. Mother Nature is not kind. I realized she had given me my monthly gift and I had bled through my pants. Mother Nature also gives us brilliant ideas to deal with problems such as these. Since I had checked my luggage and was wearing the only clothes I had, I would wash my pants in the sink and hang them to dry, for surely they would dry by morning. (Which I forgot was already here at one in the morning.) But sometimes things are overlooked in times of crisis. I washed my pants in the sink and got most of the stain out. I hung them over the shower rod to dry.

I ate the meager snacks I had from my first plane ride and fell asleep quickly. Only to be woken up an hour later to the sounds of yelling from the room next door. I must admit at first it startled me with thoughts of bullets flying through the wall. But I told myself again to just chill out and go back to sleep. I finally fell asleep again around 3:00 a.m. and woke the next morning to my alarm.

First thing I did was check my pants and yes, of course, they were still very, very damp. I had no other clothing to put on, so I put them on and tied my sweater around my waist. I called the number I had been given by the cabdriver the night before, and he said he would be there in fifteen minutes to pick me up. I got ready and went downstairs to meet him. By the time I got downstairs, there was a line of cabdrivers already in front of the hotel. One saw me and immediately descended upon me like I was some kind of tasty morsel for him to consume. I told him I had already called for a ride, but in their foreign language I don’t know if they understood me. I kept saying, No, thank you, but he kept saying, No, that’s not how it works. I was feeling very intimidated, so I called my cabdriver back and explained what was going on. He said, It’s okay. Just go ahead and use the first cab in the line. I thanked him for his trouble and got into the cab. Who knew there was cab etiquette? I mean, shouldn’t you just be able to get in any cab you want? So many rules to figure out sometimes. Why can’t things just be simple?

On arriving back at the airport, I went into the security line thinking I had a plane ticket. The security officer informed me that I didn’t have a ticket and said it was a voucher for a ticket and I needed to go to the airline desk. I went to the front desk and was told that I was going to be put on standby for the next available flight home. It came with a layover, too. Again what happened to simple? It turned out my flight had to go four hours in one direction and then back the same way two hours to get where I needed to go. It wasn’t like I was going to a tiny airport, even. In fact, it was to a big airport in a major city. It seems like something is a little off in that thinking. The lady next to me told me she had taken a plane to a city in the Midwest and because of weather she had to land in a different city. She added that when she got to that city, the airline had to put her on a bus because they had no room on any planes to the city she actually needed to be in. She told me the bus ride took two hours and when she got there, she had to book a flight back to her car at the original airport where she was supposed to land. The airline had told her nowhere did her ticket say they had to fly her to her destination. I guess it might make sense to somebody, but it didn’t to me. Five hours later, I finally arrived home, exhausted but very proud of myself.

Excellent Book - Definitely Recommend It
By Texasgoldengirl
Reading this book was a roller coaster experience for me. At times, I joyfully celebrated her freedom with her, the reunion wiith her family, her delightful new experiences. It's an upbeat book, but a few times when she briefly mentioned necessary and painful therapy sessions, I felt furious with Phillip Garrido. Then I joyfully celebrated another one of her first experiences with her.

Imagine being kidnapped as a a child and then rescued 18 years later. The prison door opens, and you walk out into your new found freedom. Jaycee takes us on this journey with her as she shares her first experiences, the challenges, fears and thrills. Along the way, she inspires us.

Inspirational and Spirit Lifting
By Amazon Customer
My admiration for anyone who triumphs over hardships is tenfold. In Ms. Dugard's circumstances, it goes much higher. She amazed me in her first book, and I enjoyed following her through first adventures and experiences after having lived in horrible conditions for eighteen years. Her spirit and love for life are infectious. Jaycee has a wonderful sense of humor and a beautiful way in how she goes about living her life. Her family and friends' support is golden. I so feel for her mother and what she must have gone through all those years. I also learned that the term Stockholm Syndrome should be banned from our vocabulary and psychology textbooks. Jaycee is a survivor and did what she must in order to survive the long duration of captivity she had to endure at the hands of a crazed couple.

Review
Praise for Alfredo Corchado’s Midnight in Mexico:

"Electrifying… the portrait that Corcahdo paints is all the more heartrending for Mexico's extraordinary promise... Security and the drug war that are Mexico's biggest worries… watching Corchado struggle in the crucible, trying to do the right thing by his two homelands, one can't help being reminded… the dawn that will follow this 'midnight in Mexico' will come only if we take some of the responsibility. The health of this neighbor is integral to our own."
—Washington Post

"Corchado looks at Mexico's darkest hour. And doesn't blink."
—Alan Cheuse, Dallas Morning News

"A riveting account that features many of the places and personalities that have been central to Mexico's recent nightmare…Corchado is a dogged and savvy journalist who manages to be everywhere a good reported should be… A unique binational perspective on the two countries he calls home, expressing admiration for the determination of U.S. and Mexican officials to fight a shared problem by taking on shared responsibility."
—San Francisco Chronicle

"[Corchado's] solid research and detailed understanding of the forces at work there make the book an important one for anyone who cares about Mexico, and his personal struggle with his homeland make it a raw, compelling read."
—Miami Herald

"The secret revealed at [Midnight in Mexico's] conclusion is more compelling thanCitizen Kane’s'Rosebud'… I won’t spoil the ending here, but you will shiver when you get there, and you may even weep. Either way, you will understand Corchado’s need to stay in Mexico and his need to bring us stories that we need to read."
—Texas Observer

"An excellent, first-hand description of what a journalist must endure to report critically on Mexico."
—El Paso Times

"Having lived and reported through four presidencies… His own story is emblematic… People are willing to do anything about Latin America other than read about it, or so it's been said. This is one book about Latin America that merits attention."
—Kirkus

"This book is about the blood-drenched borderlands that divide Alfredo Corchado's two countries, Mexico and the United States, which still dominate his own life. Told against the backdrop of the horrifically violent drug wars that have turned much of Mexico into a charnel land, Corchado shares his own story and that of his family with a moving degree of honesty and acuity. Corchado's love for his immigrant family and pride in what they have achieved is palpable, yet weighted down by a sense of what they, and Mexico, may have lost forever in the exchange. In many ways, Midnight in Mexico stands as a raw, real-life parable for the paradoxes of the Mexican-American experience, and it is both a riveting and gut-wrenching read."
—Jon Lee Anderson, author of Che Guevara: A Revolutionary Life and The Fall of Baghdad

"Midnight in Mexico is the story of a journalist's dangerous and notable efforts to report on Mexico's horrible drug wars. The book brings a special clarity, the clarity of the personal and particular, to a very important and confusing subject, and it is in itself an absorbing story, marked by careful attention to fact and also by the author's deep love for his homeland. Mr. Corchado is the kind of reporter and writer who revives one's faith in journalism."
—Tracy Kidder, Pulitzer Prize winning author of Strength in What Remains

"Anyone who wants to learn about Mexico on the inside, especially how the United States affects it, illegally and legally, will learn much from this sharply perceptive and moving account."
—John Womack Jr., Robert Woods Bliss Professor of Latin American History and Economics, Harvard University

"Alfredo Corchado is the top American journalist covering Mexico today. His life embodies the complex blending of the U.S. and Mexico. Corchado’s knowledge of the Mexican political system, the drug trade, and modern Mexican society is non-pareil."
—Howard Campbell, author of Drug War Zone

"One of the keenest observers of Mexico today, Corchado tells his story of Mexico, of the hope of its democratic opening, of the often despair at its violence, and of its ever closer ties with his other country, the United States."
—Shannon K. O’Neill, Senior Fellow for Latin American Studies, Council on Foreign Relations

"Anyone interested in what is happening and has happened in Mexico for the past six years must read this book. We can call what is happening in Mexico a “drug war” but that phrase cheapens the politics and the economics that govern the relationship between the United States and Mexico. I believe Midnight in Mexico will become one of the most necessary books about the Mexican-American experience in this country. More than a journalist, Alfredo Corchado is the real thing, a voice that represents millions of people."
—Benjamin Alire Saenz, American Book Award winning author of Calendar of Dust

Childish, self absorbed account of what exactly?
By dead man walking
I agree with all the one-star and two-star reviews. This book was a self-indulgent exercise that provided very little insight or information into the history and situation in Mexico. It read like a highschooler's diary instead of solid reporting. His writing coach to whom he gives praise in the Acknowldgements apparently didn't explain to Corchado the difference between journal writing and journalism. For comparison, I would hold up Luis Urrea's The Devil's Highway or William Rempel's At the Devil's Table regarding related subjects. Simply put, a good reporter removes himself from his story and acts more like a camera operator whom you completely forget is mediating between you the viewer and the story because the coverage is so absorbing and faithful. Instead, Corchado blathers on and on about his stupid girlfriend who was not even part of the story, about his mommy and daddy, about all of his high level contacts and great importance to the cartels (aka "name-dropping"),about his favorite restaurants in El Paso, but mainly about his favorite Mexican bands and songs, to which his English-speaking readers, for the most part, would not even relate. If you would like a better understanding of Mexican current affairs or other important issues such as immigration reform, I would pass on this book and would suggest that you check out Oscar Martinez's book, The Beast, instead.

Courageous Reporter, Devastation in Mexico
By Loyd Eskildson
Nearly 100,000 people have been killed or have disappeared since President Calderon launched a war on cartels in 2006. At the time, less than 20% of those detained for drug trafficking were convicted, cops were underpaid and forced to rely on bribes to put food on the table, low rates of tax collection limited funding, and the education system was run by a corrupt union. (The country lost an estimated $50 billion to tax evaders, criminals, and corruption.) The murder clearance rate was less than 5% at the time.

July 2007 was the last time author Corchado felt safe in Mexico - that was when a U.S. investigator with informants inside the cartels told Alfredo, a reporter covering the drug wars, he'd been targeted for assassination. Alfredo been threatened three times previously, but this was the first time a timeline (24 hours) had been attached to a threat. Past threats brought bulletproof office windows, iron bars on his apartment windows, and a panic button connected to Mexican security consultants.

I particularly appreciated the author's coverage of how the drug trade got started in Mexico. Opium production began in the 1940s when the U.S. needed morphine for soldiers in WWII, even though growing it was illegal in Mexico. Pot cultivation also began at that time, and demand exploded in the 1960s and 1970s. A few Mexican families controlled the entire production and distribution chain (cartel men married each other's sisters), and law enforcement couldn't get past these family ties. By the 1980s, Americans also developed a taste for cocaine, and Columbia became a supplier. The easy route went through the Caribbean, but American ships and planes made that too risky. Thus, Mexico became the preferred, safer route. Tunnels crossing the U.S. border were dug as early as the 1980s, and migrants were often used as mules, sometimes unwittingly. Today the Sinloa cartel (the largest) can buy a kilo of South American cocaine for $2,000; its value increases to $10,000 upon entering Mexico, $30,000+ upon reaching the U.S., and $100,000 when broken up for retail distribution. An estimated 500,000 Mexican jobs are attributable to the drug trade.

Another key topic - why the explosion of violence that began in 2006? Corchado tells us that Mexico's long-time ruling party (PRI) had grown older, more divided, and weaker, leading to lessened authority on drug matters. Another factor - the new PAN government decentralized government, making it easier (per the author) for the rule of law to be taken over by the cartels. The cartels started running wild, fighting amongst each other as they too became divided. Mexico's murder rate had fallen 37% between 1997 and 2006 - by 2008 it had tripled. A key enabler - the Bush administration's rolling back Clinton-era restrictions on the sale of high-powered weapons such as the AR-15 quickly flooded Mexico with these weapons.

A third major topic explained in 'Midnight in Mexico' is how immigration into the U.S. evolved over the years. After the Great Crash of 1929, Mexicans within the U.S. were sent back by the busload, no questions asked. Then Mexican braceros helped feed Americans and worked in some factories during WWII. For example, in 1940 Nevada, there were about one million whites working in the fields; this fell to about 60,000 by 1942. After WWII came the Korean War, and a renewed need for workers from Mexico - especially to feed the growing baby-boomers. There were an estimated 430,000 Mexicans that entered the U.S. legally in 1957 - among them, the author's father. (All it took was 25 cents to cover a phone call to his sister in El Paso, the bus ride to her house, and a soft drink.) By 1964 the number living and working in the U.S. had doubled to five million. In 1993, Mexico's then President Salinas pushed for NAFTA passage among congressional leaders as a way to keep otherwise immigrants home and employed in Mexico. Instead, NAFTA brought in subsidized corn from Iowa that made it impossible for Mexico's two million corn farmers to compete - this both added to the number of immigrants to the U.S. and weakened the PRI at the polls.

Where did the directive come from to kill Corchado, and why? Eventually he learned that it originated from the head of the Zeta gang (Miguel Trevio Morales, aka 'Forty'), Mexico's #2 drug cartel. He was upset about Corchado's reporting of a government-brokered cartel peace, and also wanted to know Corchado's sources so they could also be eliminated. He didn't want government corruption brought out into the daylight as this risked their ability to conduct business. Corchado estimates the drug business in Mexico is a $10 - $40 billion business, compared to $22 billion in remittances. Kickbacks to the government ran as much as $500 million/year. (The peace plan fell apart after a few weeks.) Morales is now on Mexico's most-wanted list, with a $7.5 million bounty ($5 million from the U.S.) for his arrest and conviction, and reportedly sleeps in his car (along with hundreds of thousands of dollars to bribe his way out of capture), protected by 15 layers of security, often travels in ambulances or low-flying planes, and likes to live in the forests.

Bottom-Line: It takes incredible courage to fill author Corchado's shoes. I wonder what would happen to the drug war in Mexico if drugs were legalized in the U.S.

The Absolute Necessity of the Holy Spirit
By LC01
This book, which is a series of Wigglesworth's sermons, was tremendous. We are meant to walk in victory in this life and in so doing point to the reality of the living God. With God on the throne, with Jesus in our hearts, with the Holy Spirit's power and leading in our lives, our faith is no mere belief or doctrine but a powerful, living, overflowing spiritual reality open to all. Wigglesworth put no constraints on God; he accepted Him at his Holy Word and gladly received all of the promises available to us all. Trust, yield, receive the Holy Ghost, know His presence daily, follow His leading - and wield His power to bring sinners to Christ accordingly. Wigglesworth's example is to be followed if our lives are to have the meaning and purpose God meant for them to have.

Powerful Book!
By M. J. Welcome
Smith Wigglesworth is known as a faith filled man of God whose ministry span several decades. He is known for his straight forwardness and his uncanny ability to trust God no matter what.

This man of God has confronted the devil where ever he met him and in his book Wigglesworth on the Anointing he showed the reader how to do the same. This book is a collection of sermons which were compiled into a book so that readers could experience a deeper anointing from God in their lives.

Wigglesworth points out that each Christian has the ability live in victory and power through the equipping of Holy Spirit. But in order to do so self must die. He points out that the devil will take all the comfort that we give him. In order to have victory the devil must be challenged and defeated and that can only occur through Jesus.

Each believer has a choice...you can stay at the level you are at or you can seek a deeper anointing. If you are ready for a deeper anointing then this book is for you.

Wigglesworth comes across as a powerhouse of faith. His book is written in a simple yet straight forward manner. There are some typographical errors and incomplete thoughts...nonetheless you will feel the anointing of God on you as you read his words.

This book is for people who want to experience a closer walk with God...a more powerful anointing on their lives, or who desire to do greater works for the Lord...

Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto, by Mark R. Levin

Don’t miss syndicated radio host and author Mark Levin's #1 New York Times acclaimed and longtime bestselling manifesto for the conservative movement.

When nationally syndicated radio host Mark R. Levin’s Liberty and Tyranny appeared in the early months of the Obama presidency, Americans responded by making his clarion call for a new era in conservatism a #1 New York Times bestseller for an astounding twelve weeks. As provocative, well-reasoned, robust, and informed as his on-air commentary, with his love of our country and the legacy of our Founding Fathers reflected on every page, Levin’s galvanizing narrative provides a philosophical, historical, and practical framework for revitalizing the conservative vision and ensuring the preservation of American society.

In the face of the modern liberal assault on Constitution-based values, an attack that has resulted in a federal government that is a massive, unaccountable conglomerate, the time for reinforcing the intellectual and practical case for conservatism is now. In a series of powerful essays, Levin lays out how conservatives can counter the tyrannical liberal corrosion that has filtered into every timely issue affecting our daily lives, from the economy to health care, global warming to immigration, and more.

From Publishers Weekly
Author and conservative talk radio host Levin (Rescuing Sprite, Men in Black) takes on the Statist, a liberal straw man, in this collection of polemics against left-wing tenets (like "economic and social justice"), touchstones (like the New Deal) and institutions (strongholds of liberal thought like academia and the mainstream media). With "an insatiable appetite for control" and a veil of "moral indignation," Levin finds the Statist not only in congressional Democrats and President Obama's White House, but in "neo-Statists" like compassionate conservative Michael Gerson, and the Fed and Treasury under G.W. Bush. Many of Levin's arguments reiterate familiar tropes, including a "strict constructionist" view of the Constitution that sees Social Security as patently un-American. Predictably, Levin opposes the extension of health benefits, derides global warming (implicating Obama's "global warming czar" as a leader in "the Socialist International's Commission for a Sustainable World Society"), and fights back against immigrants, whom the Statist portrays "as universally more virtuous than the citizen." For those new to the Tea Party, Levin offers a handy roundup of conservative talking points, but anyone paying attention to talk radio over the past few years won't learn anything new.

Review
"Levin has delivered a stalwart conservative manifesto written by a conservative who doesn't want to re-brand and repackage conservatism into liberalism. He draws on founding principles, not polls, to lay out the agenda for the Right -- and to illuminate the fatal flaws of statism." -- Michelle Malkin

"The necessary book of the Obama era." -- Jeffrey Lord, "The American Spectator"

"It is a rarity that an important book arrives at its perfect moment. Such is the case with "Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto"...Against this tidal wave, Mark Levin offers not so much a defense as a plan of attack, a clarion call to roll back the seas of Change." -- Andrew C McCarthy, "The New Criterion "

"This is a superbly useful book. It is the perfect companion for the college freshman to fortify the student against what he or she is about to hear. It is an ideal detoxicant for the graduating senior. Most vitally, it should be read by those who do not consider themselves conservatives, because it carefully lays out the central historic, philosophic and constitutional relationship between conservative principles and our individual freedom." -- Tony Blankley, "The Washington Times"

"If you want to rediscover true conservatism, read Mark Levin's "Liberty and Tyranny". If you want to help preserve liberty, buy copies for your kids." -- Terry Jeffrey, CNS News

"Mark Levin's "Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto" couldn't be more relevant or important. It is a masterful restatement of conservative principles that is succinct...and yet comprehensive. It is thoughtful and deep but highly readable. It is timely yet timeless." -- David Limbaugh, TownHall.com

""Liberty and Tyranny" is Mark Levin: a man who loves his family and country and believes ideas have consequences -- and therefore will fight passionately for what he believes and knows to be true." -- Kathryn Jean Lopez, "National Review"

"While it may present itself as a "conservative manifesto" (and it is that, too) it is also a compelling primer on the most basic principles of the American political order." -- Gary L. McDowell, "American Thinker"

"This has the answer for everything you've asked yourself about yourself, and why you believe what you believe." -- Rush Limbaugh

"This is quite simply the most important book of our times." -- Scott Miller, "The Conservative Post"

A huge all-powerful government is completely incompatible with individual freedom
By Jim T.
You can't go wrong with a Mark Levin book. His analysis of our national problems is insightful and accurate. Levine doesn't call himself a Republican, he calls himself a "constitutional conservative in a post-constitutional era". As this nation departs from the constitution, our problems get bigger and freedom is diminished. Ultimately our trust in ever bigger government will extinguish our freedom as we become increasingly dependent upon government for everything. Nowadays, no one quotes JFK any more ("ask not what your country can do for you"). Now it seems that people expect their country to do almost everything for them. But a government powerful enough to prevent you from failing is also powerful enough to prevent you from succeeding too. Do you want to avoid failure or would you rather succeed in life? The stakes are high. If we want to remain free, we must choose wisely. The American people need a wake up call, and Mark Levin delivers it.

Essential Reading for Those Who Still Love the Idea of America
By Joe S. Davis
The main problem in America today is that people have no understanding of the Constitution. This is partly because of complacency of the People and partly because the ruling class, which includes the mainstream media, deliberately misinform the People in order to gain and maintain they're dependency on big centralized government, thus perpetuating the power of the overlords. Liberty and Tyranny is not only educational, but an essential antidote for the toxic, dehumanizing authoritarianism that has been systematically foisted upon the American people for the last 100 years. It is essential reading. And Mark Levin is a hero for working so hard researching and organizing his argument. Absolutely convincing!

This book will help people make an educated decision on whether to support a path of Conservatism/Small Gov or Socialism/Big Gov
By E-dub
Amazing book by a true patriot. I just wish it was required reading in our schools instead of the brainwashing, Marxist, Communist Manifesto, liberal garbage the Dept. of Education is subjecting our impressionable and unfortunate youth to. This book teaches us about our exceptional country's past. It also reminds us of our brilliant and brave Four Fathers, who founded this nation and who wrote the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution of the United States. We need to get back to this county's original philosophy of exceptionalism and Conservatism. We can not continue on a path of Socialism, where the lazy is rewarded with entitlements. Thank you Mr. Levin. I can't wait to read Ameritopia. I'm sure it will be an educational page turner like Liberty and Tyanny.
