Story starters from classic literature (and gorgeous illustrations)

Excellent storytelling prompts from classic literature, accompanied by beautiful, detailed illustrations. Willy (who is an ape) imagines himself in classic stories like Peter Pan, Treasure Island, Robin Hood, The Wind In The Willows, the Wizard of Oz etc....he describes the scene and the characters (who are also apes), lays the foundation and then asks the reader "what do you think happened next?" The child reading this may want to make up a wacky alternate version of the story, or it might cause him or her to want to hear the original, or possibly both. It's a wonderful storytelling exercise, and I do love the combination of vintage classics and modern language (Friar Tuck calls Willy a WIMP...made me laugh).... the only caveat I would note is that in general, picture books are aimed at ages approximately 4 to 8, and this one is really more suited for a child of 7 or 8. There are two or three longish paragraphs on each page of text, and the language may be too complex to keep a preschooler interested.

Discover the Adventure

Willy is a young ape and each week he walks through a set of magical doors that allow him to go on some amazing adventures, WILLY'S STORIES. On the following pages after a brief introduction, Willy describes some of these adventures and ends each section by asking a question of the reader. At the end of the book the reader discovers (if they haven't already guessed) where the doors Willy walked through led and how Willy is able to go on each of these adventures. As it turns out, Willy visits a library and each of the stories he tells are books he checks out and reads. The illustrations are engaging and humorous. I enjoyed the book and trying to figure out which stories Willy was describing. I actually was introduced to a book I had never heard of before (THE TINDERBOX). Overall, WILLY'S STORIES would be a good book to read aloud to a group of children or a fun book for a slightly older reader (2nd grade level).

Came for the gorillas, stayed for the whimsy

Willy's Stories is a phenomenal example of inter-literary references done right. Each page boasts a full-color illustration depicting pivotal moments from classic children's literature. Except, instead of the original human characters, gorillas are featured. Because gorillas, obviously. The thematic familiarity of classic works juxtaposed with this whimsical adaption makes for a very refreshing, interesting read.

The only aspect I am not really crazy about is the absence of the fourth wall, which I think was implemented rather clumsily. At the end of every story, the audience is specifically invited to speculate what happens next in the story, e,g. "what do you think happened then?" In this manner, it's excellent for specifically assigning writing prompts to kids. Since we home school, this aspect of the book will be of utility as our kiddos get older; I just would have preferred the prompts implemented with greater finesse, � la Ballad or The Whisper - both of which encourage audiences to fill in story gaps and provide their own continuation, respectively, but without any of the characters addressing readers directly. Just my personal preference for that one.

Age-wise, this was very well-received by my 4-year-old. He was not familiar with all of the stories referenced so, instead of speculating about the stories along the same veins as the original classics, he tied each one to its predecessor. E.g., when asked about the nature of the footprint from Robinson Crusoe, he decided it was probably one of the pirates from the subsequent Treasure Island page, etc. So, do not let something as silly as age recommendations deter you from this purchase.

Shedding light on history of Computing

Many a historical account of a period suffers from describing how they meant to happen, rather than how it really happend. This book is exceptional in that, it truely makes an effort to set some histroical inaccuracies to the right, particularly influence of Turing on software engineering. His insights and historical sleuthing on early days of software engineering is exceptional. The book is also a goldmine for many budding historians, as there are many pointers to go into unxplored areas of computing history (based on his insights).

Some of the best bits are in the interview transcripts of notable Turing award winners (Hoare, Wirth, Liskov & Naur). The inteviews seem well prepared to bring out thoughtful responses. I would already buy this book only for these interview bits.

A book well worth reading by anyone who is interested in computing.

FE Exam Applicant - Not Vine Review

I am currently preparing for the Electrical and Computer FE Exam. I had the original Lindenburg FE review manual, but since they switched formats last year, I wanted one that was specific to the exam I was going to take. There are almost none....at all. But, I did get a lot out of the general review manual, so I purchased this one.

PROS:
- It covers ALL of the topics that will now be covered in the Electrical/Computer CBT FE
- You don't have to filter through the sections you don't need like in the Rapid Preparation Manual
- Because there are fewer areas of engineering that are covered, each section is in much, much greater depth.
- There are Diagnostic Exams at the beginning of each section to gauge how much time you need to focus on them.
- While it is not organized the way NCEES has organized the EC outline, I think they made an attempt to group similar topics together so it flows. Sometimes it works, some times it doesn't.

CONS:
- My single biggest gripe is the fact that they do not have the post section FE-style problem sets (as in the Rapid Prep). As far as practice problems are concerned, you get the diagnostic exam and one example per subtopic.

Overall, I feel confident that this is the best prep book out there for the current version of the FE. Further, I have a degree in Software Engineering, NOT Electrical and I feel like this is a good TEACHER, not just refresher. I will be buying the NCEES practice test set as my exam date gets closer, to make up for the lack of practice problems in this, but I don't consider that a deal breaker

Best study material for Electrical FE exam!

Some background information: I bought this book about two months before my FE exam. I also took the exam before my last quarter in college.

This book prepares you for everything the exam can throw at you. It's chapters are categorized by the subjects/topics that are on the exam. I used this book as my only study reference and worked through it starting two months before my exam. I did EVERY problem that was listed in here, and went over them twice to make sure I understood the question/procedure. I finished the problems about a week before my exam, and I rested the week of the exam. I passed!!! I think anyone can pass the exam if they use this book correctly. Michael Lindeburg is the man!

Mediocre. Don't be fooled by fake reviews.

book is overrated. If you are taking FE this book is terrible for electromagnetics and power. Only 2 or 3 topics from FE guide was listed.
The circuit topics didn't have examples for KCL and KVL, thevinn and Norton equivalent circuits. (Thank God for the internet).
The only topic covered 100% is maths and control systems. I will take the exam soon, and I know for sure that this guide wont help me pass. This book is overrated for sure. even topics are scattered around other topics had to go to section 24 to find power factor while other power topics are in 26 to 29 section.

Book is not worth more than $70 in my own humble opinion. I probably will pass but this book gets no credit.
had to use internet to learn KVL, KCL, and 2-port impedance models. the book solution to example for the 2-port model was horrible. Buyers beware!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Update: I took FE today and I flunked most transistor questions, no surprise due to little review in this book, and power was very challenging too. The book lacks in both of these areas. I cross my hand and hope to pass but I feel like I made 60%. General was easy and the book covered it well, but the core topics like EMAG, power, electronics, and even thevinin equivalent cir are lacking. If I had not used Internet to figure how to solve thevinin circuits I would have failed about 4 questions today. I wonder who keep giving this book high reviews were they given free books for their fake reviews. How come non of them pointed out the short ones of the book like I did? Now go girl out why.

The increase in age-related memory impairment has produced a host of new books on preventing (or slowing) memory loss based on the latest scientific knowledge of brain and memory. Possibly Useful, with Caveats

I have some, probably age-related, memory impairment. My medical team recommended this book for its practical information on how to preserve and enhance memory. There were a couple of ideas that I had not run across before, and some assessments that provided a contrast to my day-to-day experience. A substantial amount of information (for example, the role of glia cells in information processing in the brain) has appeared since the date of the book, and its lack makes some of the discussions of mechanisms seem incomplete; the rate at which new information is appearing makes such early dating inevitable at present, however,. On the whole, the material seems useful, especially to those who have not been exposed to the concepts and techniques earlier, or who need review and prodding to apply what they know to their own case.

Good information

I have started and stopped the book several times, mostly because of time constraints around the holidays. Have yet to complete the book .. What I like about the book is that it is readable in small portions, the tenor is positive, it is helpful in understanding what's going on in our heads and also helps in understanding our older family members and what they may be concerned about. Maybe more from this end when I finally finish the book.

One last thing.. think I'd purchase this in paper rather than on line for ease in making notes.

Exactly as the title states

Truly as the title suggests, THE seminal book for all lay folks on Memory improvement. It is the first in a series of similar books by Dr. Small. It is very easy to read and keeps your interest. The methods described definitely work. Dr. Small is the real deal, bonafide professor at UCLA. This is NOT an infomercial type book but highly useful without commercial representation. As many people, I have memory problems and Dr. Small's methods definite work for improvement but not perfection. They require a little practice like all skills.

I work at Rodale and was lucky enough to be a test panelist for the program outlined in this book. Let me tell you...it works! Peter just has a unique gift of getting through to people, helping them get over whatever emotional ties they have to "stuff."

"I might need this one day" is no longer an excuse I use to keep unnecessary items, and I'm finding happiness in other places, not buying "stuff."

This book lays out a plan to create a vision for each room in your house and then systematically helps you declutter each room. It actually made decluttering and letting go of things, dare I saw it, fun.

For years, I knew I had to get more organized and get rid of things, but no one has ever gotten through to me like Peter has. I lost almost 12 pounds on the book, and my house is looking better and better every day. Thank you, Peter!

Could Not Wait to Read It and Got It the Day It Came Out

The three main points of the book are lose the clutter, lose the weight and use mindfulness to avoid malignant emotions, food and items in your life. Organizational guru Peter Walsh helped me think through changes I have been making and continue to make. "Somehow, at some point, you become too large for your comfort," he writes at the beginning. He also helps explain how stuff, emotions and eating are all related and not helping me get the life I want and deserve. I want a conversation with him on diet programs, although he gives a simple program and simple exercises. He even meddles with my finances and email, but all to my benefit. I am in the process of downsizing and his logic helps me divide my stuff into Zone One and Zone Two. Thank you, Peter, for nailing it!

Loving it!

Still reading it. I'm starting week #2 tomorrow which is decluttering the bedroom. Peter Walsh has great information, gives lots of encouragement and brings in experts for the diet and exercise portion and the mindfulness meditation. I'm doing my own diet right now, but I love how his is set up. You have so many healthy choices its not a diet, but being mindful about healthy food choices. The exercise portion is great if you don't have any equipment. I go to the gym, but the book offers good options. The parts on being mindful are incredibly helpful when dealing with cravings or emotional attachment to stuff. It has really changed the way I look at things. Going through my kitchen in week #1 was difficult at times, but also very rewarding. I have filled 3 kitchen garbage bags for the trash and put 3 boxes of items for a garage sale, or to give away. It is a great relief to have a vision for the spaces in my house and work to accomplish it. My house is not messy and it doesn't look cluttered, but inside my cupboards...holy Hannah! I have found things I'd forgotten about and never use. It feels great to make decisions about those things and move them out.

So I'm off to week #2 for another cathartic experience!! I highly recommend this book!

About the Author
Larry Connors, CEO and founder of TradingMarkets.com Mr. Connors has over 26 years of experience working in the financial markets industry. He started his career in 1982 at Merrill Lynch and later moved on to become a Vice President with Donaldson, Lufkin, Jenrette. In addition to his role as CEO of The Connors Group, Mr. Connors serves as a Managing Partner of Connors Capital, a private investment and financial markets research firm.

Mr. Connors has authored top-selling books on market strategies and volatility trading, including How Markets Really Work, Street Smarts (with Linda Raschke), and Investment Secrets of a Hedge Fund Manager. Street Smarts has recently been selected by Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities magazine as one of The Classics for trading books written in the past century. His books have been translated into German, Italian and Japanese.

Cesar attended the University of California, Berkeley where he received his Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 1989 and his Masters of Science in Computer Science in 1990.

This is a no-nonsense, very well written trading strategies book, with statistical back-tracing to support its claims.

There are two major messages in the book, and anything else in the book rotates around these claims:
1. Always Trust long term momentum (never buy the market when it is below its 200 days moving average) and
2. Buy short-term lows, sell short-term highs.

That's all.

I did test the statistical results and did get results that are consistent with the book. But as it is always the case, back-tracing is not a proof for future results, no matter how good the past results are.

A problem which I found with the statistical analysis, is that it completely ignores risk factors, such as standard deviation and the Sharpe ratio and also, their is no evidence for the robustness of the strategies and their susceptibility to small parametric changes.

The book is pretty close in its contents to the corresponding website:
[...] which caused me to feel that the $50 spent on this book aren't justified.

Summary:
Pros:
- Very well written.
- Clear reading. Easy to implement the strategies.
- Substantial statistical backing of each and every strategy.

Cons:
- Too expensive: very similar to the web site
- Statistical analysis does not cover risk aspects
- Poor coverage for short and market neutral strategies

Read it...and my trading is already improved

I am mostly a short-term trader so I buy every book I can find on the subject in search of something that will help to improve my performance. As my wife can attest...I am usually disappointed and throw them into a storage box in our den so I can sell them on eBay. Most of it is pure garbage either written by people who don't trade or who are guessing about what works merely because it looks good in back testing.

On the other hand, Larry Connors' new book on Short Term Strategies is sitting in a place of honor on my book shelf along with the small handful of books that have truly helped me in my trading over the past 20 years. What I appreciate about Larry's research is that he doesn't just look at pretty patterns on a chart. Instead, he finds edges that hardly anybody in the trading world or financial media knows about and builds strategies with simple rules that any trader can apply.

This book contains numerous stock and ETF strategies that, in my opinion, are worth thousands of dollars to any trader who will spend them to learn learning them.

Do you want to improve your trading? In my opinion this book will help you get there.

A Gem for the experienced Trader looking for an edge

For a novice to investing, the very slim book might appear to be a letdown. Lacking experince they may not know what they have in their hands. But for the experienced trader looking for an edge or a refinement to an entry, this book is well worth it's money. Unfortunatley, the author hints at the power of combining strategies and personalizing them, but he provides few examples to guide novices. The experinced trader will take the presented "edges" and back test them on a platform like TD Ameritrade's Strategy Desk or MetaStock, and they will find they are able to verify the value of the disclosed strategies. What is presented in this book is very powerful, but it is one of many parts of the process to become a better trader. I personally have found great value in the RSI work and the simple Double 7's strategy. My first small 100 share test trade paid for the book more than three times over.
