Possessive noun phrases can be broadly divided into three categories - ownership of property, whole-part relations (such as body and plant parts), and blood and affinal kinship relations. As Professor Aikhenvald shows in her extensive opening essay, the same possessive noun or pronoun phrase is used in English and in many other Indo-European languages to express possession of all three kinds - as in "Ann and her husband Henry live in the castle Henry's father built with his own hands" - but that this is by no means the case in all languages. In some, for example, the grammar expresses the inalienability of consanguineal kinship and sometimes also of sacred or treasured objects. Furthermore the degree to which possession and ownership are conceived as the same (when possession is 100% of the law) differs from one society to another, and this may be reflected in their linguistic expression. Like others in the series this pioneering book will be welcomed equally by linguists and anthropologists.

This book is enthralling. The harrowing tale of Laura Helling made it difficult to put the book down. I read it in two goes - mainly because it was the middle of the night when I forced myself to turn out the light until the next day. It is difficult to believe that a human being could use another in such a decadent and degrading way, and even more astonishing that no one believed the poor woman. If it hadn't said this was based on a true story I would have thought the author let her imagination run riot, but no it definitely states the basic facts are true.
This book is well written, emotive, distressing and as I finished the last page I was actually crying, not just tears in my eyes, but tears on my cheeks. Definitely need a strong stomach to read this book.

Sad But True.

Laura Hellings accounts her story of life in Hell married to an abusive husband. While I'd like to believe the torturous abuse Ms. Hellings describes is simply the workings of the author's creative mind, I spent over a decade working in a hospital where the emergency department dealt with similar situations all too often. While the entire book takes place in a court room, the author keeps the story fresh and entertaining by altering the narrative. This book would make a great read for anyone who has suffered domestic abuse, or anyone trying to understand how or why the victims continue living in an unsafe environment.

A gripping story I couldn't put down!

This story is of a woman who has traveled to hell and came back to tell her tale. I was horrified at what Laura Hellings had to endure at the hands of her husband and had NOWHERE to go. One hopes this is just a fiction story, but knows a person who can write these kinds of scenes with the passion that this author did, might have lived the life! Courageous author and a courageous mother to finally get her small pound of flesh back! Very gripping story!

Just about perfect

This is a children's book, but adults will enjoy giving it a read now and then. I. It is not a book about magic, but it has magical and somewhat mystical elements woven into it, seamlessly blending with a believable reality. It is good writing, plain and simple, and while the story is anything but plain and simple, it is easy to follow. The complexity is useful in furthering the story and only adds to the suspense, believability and exciting pace of the tale. Even younger children, say, 8 or 9 year-olds, will stay glued to this book like I did some 15 years ago.

The Mystery of a Mouse

The book, The Secret of Nimh, is a great book because it has mice as the main characters but it is also a mystery.

The book is about one family of mice and the mother, Mrs. Frisby, is worried because her son is sick and won't be strong enough for moving day (where they have to move because the backyard they live in will get plowed). She went to the creature that is so wise and gives good advice to everyone, the owl. The owl suggested that she ask the rats for advice and off she went. These rats are not your typical rats though. They are surprisingly smart and when Mrs. Frisby saw their home, the rats had a lot of explaining to do.

What's the rat's story? Do Mrs. Frisby and her family move safely? Do they survive? You can answer all these questions if you read The Secret of Nimh.

My favorite part of the book was when the rats told their story about their lives before they moved into the yard because a lot of answers were uncovered. Before this no one really knew about the rats and what was inside the rose bush that they lived in. All the answers were uncovered when Mrs. Frisby stepped inside the rose bush to ask advice from the rats. Mrs. Frisby even learned how her husband died.

I would recommend this book because it is easy to follow the story. The events happen one at a time so you can remember everything without getting confused. I really want there to be a sequel because at the very end it kept you hanging. Overall, I think this is a great book and I think you should read it.

An excellent fiction book of intelligent rats and mice.

A mouse Mrs Frisby is faced with danger from a plough. Mr Fittsgibbon is ploughing early and she can't leave the farm because her son Timothy has Pneumonia. She went to a mouse called Mr Ages for the medcine but as the ploughing started early the medicine had no time to perform and Timothy was not allowed to go out into the cold air. She goes to an old, wise owl for some advise and the owl tells her to go to the RATS. She befriends a crow called Jeremy and he helps her get to places that would take her alone days to get to. She finds the rats home under a rosebush. She is immediately made welcome because her husband, Jonathan Frisby, assisted in the escape of the rats from NIMH.She finds a rat called Nicodemus and he tells her about NIMH and the injections they were given which were intended to make them intelligent and slow down their aging process and it worked. He also tells her that Jonathan and Mr Ages were given the injections. The rats devise a plan to move Mrs Frisby's house to the lee of the stone. The plan works and Timothy's illness has gone. The rats leave the rosebush and all electrical appliances behind and go to live in the side of a mountain, growing their own crops and living without stealing.

Yet, after ingratiating himself into the acting company, he finds true friends for the first time in his life. What will he do--betray his only friends, or risk his life by defying his guardian's orders? The story by Gary Blackwood (Dutton, 1998) brings Shakespearean England alive for young listeners through the descriptive language and situations of the many characters. The tenuous survival of children during this period, even in such a vital city as London, is an underlying backdrop. This, combined with the central issues of friendship and deception, provides a story filled with tension and surprises. Actor Ron Keith's narration adds a strong auditory element to the story. This latest from Blackwood (Beyond the Door, 1991) is a delightful and heartwarming romp through Elizabethan England. Narrator Widge, 14, resigned to leading the unremarkable life of an orphan, is bought by the self-serving Dr. Bright to learn his new ``charactery'' (shorthand), and become his secretary. Although Widge applies himself, Dr. Bright is nevertheless willing to sell the boy, for a mere ten pounds, to Simon Bass, a theatrical manager. He sends Widge to London, so that he can copy down the new play, The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, and enable Bass to perform it without paying royalties. Once within the confines of the Globe Theater, however, Widge discovers a brave new world of friendship, fun, and backstage intrigue. Welcomed into the company as an aspiring apprentice, Widge is soon learning lines, practicing sword-fighting, and avoiding Bass's henchman. The Bard himself makes a cameo appearance, as do other famous members of the company. To his credit, Blackwood limns just how Widge, who has no theatrical aspirations, proves a talented and hard-working member of the troupe. Highly Recomend!

The Shakespeare Stealer was by far one of the best historical fiction books I have ever read. I started off by having to read this book for school but I enjoyed it so much that I went on to read Shakespeare's Scribe and Shakespeare's Spy. The reason I give this book only four stars is because the first two or three chapters drag on and are hard to get through. Once you get through Widge's life as an orphan and his apprenticeship at Dr. Bright's the book is action packed and forces you to read, and read, and read on. Unlike some books I have read in the past The Shakespeare Stealer has a very satisfying ending. This was a great book and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys adventurous books! :-)

I really think that this is a wonderful book. Widge is an orphan boy who originated in the country, and has come to London with the task of stealing a play from Shakespeare himself! Instead, he ends up a part of the Globe Theater “family" and learns some new vocabulary. Along the way, he learns that “all the world's a stage" and that some people aren't who they seem......

Since the first edition was published in 1966, this work has remained a standard text for American religious history. The 2002 revision, by Gaustad (history, emeritus, Univ. of California, Riverside) and Schmidt (religion, Princeton Univ.), retains the core material with a revised chapter structure, updated bibliographies, and some text revisions. In some cases, the revisions are simply rearrangements of chapter sections, while in others there is a shift in terminology e.g., using "African American" for "black" and replacing "American religion" with the more clearly designated "American Protestantism." While such changes are subtle, they do alter the tone of the work, bringing it more in line with current approaches to the study of religion and American culture. In the case of the last three chapters, the authors have done considerable revision and brought the history up to the turn of the century. A Great Overview

This revision of 'The Religious History of America' by Gaustad and Schmidt is a wonderful and balanced overview of the religious history of the U.S.A., as the title claims. The first review here is very through so I will be brief. These two professors of religion discuss the cultural, political, and economic influences that helped shaped religion in America throughout its history.

The book starts with the state of Native American religions before the first colonist set foot on the land. And then properly shows that the first colonies were Catholic and established by Spain and Portugal. The oldest city in the U.S.A. is the Spanish Settlement of Saint Augustine in Florida. It also covers the early expeditions of the French in both the north and south regions of North America. It was only later that the Anglican and English settlements that we learn about in our history textbooks started to form in what we would later call the thirteen colonies.

The book then covers topics that include the Puritans in New England, separation of church and state, slavery, the growth of the church in the twentieth century, and the effect that war has on religion. You will read of how the growth of such a great diversity of religion came to be in the U.S.A. This is a very interesting read. This book also has an extensive bibliography for further reading and a good index. This is the book I would choose if I had to teach an introductory course in religious history in America.

helpful resource for the student of American religious history

Several years ago I purchased a couple of volumes on American religious history to help in preparing lessons or classes on the history of religion in the United States to be included in a series about church history. Compared to Sydney E. Ahlstrom's A Religious History of the American People, Gaustad's work, of which I have the original edition, is not quite as detailed, is filled with illustrations to make it more eye appealing, and while it was probably also intended as a college textbook is written in a more popular than strictly academic style. The 24 chapters are grouped into five parts. Part I covers the Age of Exploration, Part II the Age of Colonization, Part III the Age of Expansion, Part IV This Nation Under God; At Worship, and Part V This Nation Under God: At Work. The book starts with the first Catholic colonies established by Spain, Portugal, and France; moves on to the Anglican and English settlements; then covers topics that include the Puritans in New England, separation of church and state, slavery, the growth of the church in the twentieth century, and the effect that war has on rel
Author Edwin Scott Gaustad, who was a Professor of History at the University of California, Riverside, and also wrote the Historical Atlas of Religion in America, said in his Preface, "Since the purpose of this book is to describe the role of religion in American life, national history more than denominational history is pursued." Like Ahlstrom's book, one would not expect the subject to be covered from a conservative standpoint, but Gaustad does approach it with more of a traditional view than a purely sociological one. It is a helpful resource for the student of American religious history. A Revised edition entitled The Religious History of America: The Heart of the American Story from Colonial Times to Today edited by Leigh E. Schmidt, one of Gaustad's students, was published in 2002. It retains the core material with a revised chapter structure which replaces the five distinct ages of the previous editions with a four primary time-periods: the Colonial times; the Revolutionary War to the Civil War; Post Civil War to World War II; and World War II to the present, more explicit emphasis on specific historical markers that carry the multifaceted story of religion in the United States into the twenty-first century, updated bibliographies, and some text revisions.

Good overview but . . .

This book gives a good overview of the Religious history of America during most of the book but it begins to falter near the end. The authors completely leave out the Jesus Movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. As the authro writes about more recent events, a bias seems to creap in. The activities of the religious left have a tone of approval while the activites of the religious right are written with a tone of disapproval.

Wayside School is Falling Down

Do you like action, comedy, laughs, and good times? If you do then read Wayside School is Falling Down by Louis Sachar. It's about the funny and strange things that happen in Wayside school. It's one of the funniest books I have ever read.
An example of one of the funny moments was when the author wrote a whole chapter backwards! I realized the chapter was backwards after I read it forwards. What was especially interesting and funny though was that the girl in the chapter does everything backwards.
Another funny instance is that the school is thirty floors high. What's even funnier is there is only one classroom on each floor! Also there is no nineteenth floor. A different funny thing is in another chapter a girl goes on the nineteenth floor even though there isn't one.
I enjoyed the book very much. It was funny and each chapter wasn't long. You should read this book if you don't like reading. This is because it is almost like reading a book of jokes. It's not long and it's funny. You should read this book.

This book is down-right funny. Goofy even! I think it is one of the funnier, insane books for kids out there. Each chapter brings a whole new meaning to fun as you read about all the students in Mrs. Jewls's class. Trust me when I say you will love it! If you really want to have a good time while reading a book, this one is for you.

Louis Sachar has found a way to combine a child's wacky way of viewing the world, clever plays on words, phrases, and chapters(!!), and a cast of quirky characters to produce a set of books that will coax any reader to keep on reading.

Body Repair Manual

Educational book covering the art of body repairs. Gave a lot of insight as to how to maneuver metal to go back to its original shape after a ding - it many cases a lot of manual labor and body hammer/anvils involved. But the techiques are proven and could be very useful if you must make repairs yourself vice insurance paid body shop. Very comprehensive in all aspects of the body repair art with good photos and referencing of tools and products necessary to do the job. I bought two books with second one intended to have more emphasis on rust repair. This book is good enough, I no longer feel a need for the second book. If you are looking for a possible one book reference book about body repair, this book could be it.

The first part is a little boring for an international relations student, as it provides basic info on the UN and the world context in which it was created. But you know nothing or very little about this matters then it's certainly interesting. The second part of the book is made up of 7 or 8 chapters, each chapter focuses on a particular subject relevant to the UN. For instance there's one focused on the security council, another one focuses on the role of NGO's, the relationship between breton woods institutions and the NU, etc.
Each chapter is very enlightening, the author rises interesting questions about the way the UN works and its decision making processes, the author questions the legitimacy of the security council while describing very clearly the goals achieved and the challenges that remain for the UN.
Its a great book.
