Decent book, light on substance

Mishkin delivers a serviceable, but not great book. In his rush to leave his post at the Fed, you would think he would create a more engaging book, or at least include more flesh on the financial crisis. His analysis is fairly shallow and his structure seems more geared towards a freshman/high school level class than a full fledge book for college students. Several errors in the book, including on page 428 where he definitely uses incorrect numbers from the FDIC.

That being said, as some of the material was new to me, this book provides a great, accessible overview of many concepts and structures in the financial world. The readings are a breeze, and most of the examples used are easy to grasp and understand. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting an introduction to financial markets, but as a Economics and Business double major, I find it difficult to rate higher than 3 stars.

Missing Private Equity

This is a book about "Financial Institutions" and it does not discuss Private Equity firms! (as separated from Venture Capital firms). And it only discusses Venture Capital firms for a few pages. And as far as I can see, not a word about investment strategies: Levaraged Bouyots, Growth vs. Venture Capital, Mezzanine Capital, Distressed Investment.
In a book about financial institutions and their role on the financial markets, you would expect that a full chapter should be given to Investment Banking, a full chapter to Private Equity, a full chapter to Venture Capital firms, a full chapter to Angel Investing. Not in this book. Other than that, the book is written well.
Now I have to buy a book about more financial institutions.

One of the Best Books about What It's Like to Run a Fast-Growing, Innovative Business

Most business memoirs are self-serving, boring, and poorly written. To put it bluntly, they are “crap between covers.” There are very few business memoirs that are even good, since most of them make the person writing the memoir seem like a business savant who always knew the right answers and knew things would come out right. Great business memoirs are different. They portray a business situation as it was. Phil Knight’s Shoe Dog: A Memoir by The Creator of Nike is a great business memoir.

Let’s cut to the chase. This will be a great read for anybody, but if you’re thinking about starting a business, especially a business that you expect to grow, this book belongs on your must-read list. You’ll learn things that you won’t learn anywhere else and you’ll learn things that you can only learn from a story.

You’ll learn about the constant struggle to fund growth. Most of the books about entrepreneurship don’t tell you about that. If you start a business and that business starts to grow, you are funding the process out ahead of your cash flow. The result is that you’re chronically cash poor, even when you’re fabulously profitable, and that is both counterintuitive and very tough to manage.

You’ll also learn about the plusses and minuses of going public. There’s a lot here about relationships and values, and staying true to what you think is important. There are lessons about how putting people in the right job makes all the difference. And, there are lessons about balancing being a hero at work with being a parent at home.

There are also important lessons about not taking yourself too seriously. Knight describes the “executive retreats” that Nike would have. They called them “Buttface sessions.” The name came from one of the early employees who said that Nike was the only company their size where you could shout out “Hey, buttface!” and the entire management team would turn around.

There’s another important thing, too. If you think that innovation is only something that high-tech companies do, or that it requires coding, read this book. A lot of Nike’s success comes from being an innovator in shoes.

Shoe Dog is superbly written, and you’ll enjoy it if you just read it as a story. But if you’re in business, and especially if you’re starting a business and wanting to make it grow, this book should be on your must-read list. Keep it handy, right near Ben Horowitz’s The Hard Thing about Hard Things.

Toward the end of the book, Phil Knight says this:

“God, how I wish I could relive the whole thing. Short of that, I’d like to share the experience, the ups and downs, so that some young man or woman, somewhere, going through the same trials and ordeals might be inspired or comforted. Or warned. Some young entrepreneur, maybe, some athlete or painter or novelist, might press on.”

I think he achieved his goal. If you want some seasoned advice to help you run and grow your company, or if you just want to read a great business memoir, pick up a copy of Shoe Dog: A Memoir by The Creator of Nike.

Knight is the most interesting person I never knew I wanted to meet

I haven't picked out my next book yet, but I'm prepared to be let down. This one's going to be hard to beat. Shoe Dog is laugh-out-loud funny; it's sad; it's exciting; it's smart; it's honest; it's inspiring. I didn't want to reach the last page. I closed the book craving more, so I immediately slid into fanatic mode and discovered that a pilgrimage to the Nike campus in Beaverton would take me 39 hours. And there's not even a tour.

So now I'm back to normal, but I still very enthusiastically recommend this book. In the most basic terms, Phil Knight's story is one of success. It's no secret that Nike is a giant, but Knight nevertheless creates page-turning suspense at several junctures. He also gives us an intimate look at his personal life, which makes complete sense, because business is personal. For people who truly believe in what they're doing, it's impossible to separate the two. Knight's passion is punctuated by his referring to Nike as his business child and with his proclamation that "if it ever does become just business, that will mean that business is very bad." He is the most interesting person I never knew I wanted to meet.

As I approached the final pages, the critic in me wondered how this story could be complete without mention of the Nike sweat-shop crisis. Was it strategically omitted because it might ruin the warm-fuzzy feeling I have now? The answer is no. Knight includes it in the final section that brings everything up to date, in the "where are they now?" pages. I won't go into the content, but I will say that warm and fuzzy remain intact. And I have more respect for the company than ever. I am almost embarrassed that I run in Adidas.

Beautiful, honest, naked, inspiring.

I don't usually read auto-biographies, downloaded Shoe Dog on a whim and could not put it down until I reached the very last page. The final chapter materialized through a curtain of tears.

Knight's story is intriguing, his words so straight and bare that I feel I've made a new friend.

Read this if you are an entrepreneur (or married to one), an athlete, an adventurer, or simply a human. This is not the story of a company, but of the souls and persons, great adventures and struggles behind the brand.

Eye-opening view into the quantum realm

It is easy to see the beauty of mathematical equations that model the reality around us. But accompanying that math, if you are really curious, an interpretation or visualization on why it works that way is required. With classical physics, interpretations are easier. Even general relativity can be grasped with analogies (e.g. the heavy marble on the rubber sheet representing gravity around a planet). But quantum physics has always defied a plausible interpretation for me. All the popular interpretations (e.g. collapsing wave functions or splitting universes because a scientist made a measurement) sounded so arbitrary and kooky to me. This book discusses a new and completely satisfying interpretation to quantum theory and provides answers to the "quantum riddles".

This book starts with an excellent introduction into what is so unusual about the quantum realm and why it has traditionally defied interpretations. Next Dr. Kastner introduces her Possibilist Transactional Interpretation (PTI) using figures and analogies (there is no math in this book). Accepting the interpretation is still very difficult partly because the mathematics it is explaining predict that bizarre things can and do happen in this world. The interpretation is used to help visualize and explain classic quantum puzzles such as Einstein's "spooky action at a distance" and single particles seemingly taking multiple paths at the same. As the layers are peeled back, Dr. Kastner applies the interpretation to other aspects of quantum theory, physics in general, and then on to some metaphysical concepts (e.g. how space and time are borne out around us and even free will!). The book is an easy and enjoyable read while providing an completely eye-opening view into the quantum realm and the "unseen reality".

Complex but Fantastic Book

This is a an excellent follow-up to Kastner's 2012 book. Whereas that volume explored the mathematics of her expansion of the Transactional Interpretation, this popular book explains in graspable terms what is going on at the quantum level in the issuance of offer and confirmation waves and the virtual particles that give rise to these quantum exchange processes. The process is shown to produce what we can experience through the sense world. I find that Kastner's interpretation of quantum theory can explain some of what we see in relativistic quantum theory very clearly (for example, offer waves and confirmation waves contain complex numbers and so the collapse we expect to see in quantum experiments is represented by the imaginary parts of each type of wave negating each other mathematically when multiplied). Her full interpretation makes us rethink the physical world by seeing it as a field of events, which comprise actions and potential actions that are available to arise. This picture of a multidimensional sea of possibilities as reality is very different from a uni-directional world that hums along more or less predictably and her book is revolutionary for presenting it.

Things Are Not Always What They Seem

Reality is much richer than we usually notice as we go about our mundane affairs. But as the author of this book demonstrates, "things are not always what they seem."

This book isn't just a refresher on quantum mechanics. It provides a new theoretical perspective called the Possibilist Transactional Interpretation, or PTI. (This was certainly new to me at least, and I think it will be to most readers.) Kastner uses images, metaphors and carefully-crafted stories to guide the reader on a splendidly executed tour of this approach, moving through the quantum reality to everyday reality. She shows how the "riddles" of the quantum world (such as wave/particle duality, nonlocality and more) can be unraveled and made sense of.

Especially intriguing is her description of a reality that extends beyond (or outside or beneath) the spacetime framework of which we’re aware, but yet is intimately involved in the operation of events in spacetime. This deeper aspect of reality works underneath our familiar three-dimensions-plus-time to create our everyday world.

Kastner has expertise in both physics and philosophy, and her clear writing, logical presentation and understandable explanations make the complex ideas in this book accessible for any intelligent reader. Highly recommended!

I loved this little book! It was our constant companion on our first visit to the beautiful country of Brazil. Whenever we needed to find a nice place to eat or visit, we checked with our guide, the Rio de Janeiro book. I definitely recommend this book. It is easy to find details that you need and if you follow the recommendations you want go wrong!

Amazing author

I can't wait to get my hands on this book. I happen to know the author personally and she is an amazing woman. I don't know how she does it but I swear , just about every time we've spoken I have learned something new from her. She's full of insight , wisdom, intuition and inspiration. I'm itching to read it right this second and thanks to e-reading , I can! I hope everyone comes away with learning something new and interesting and I'm positive you will!

Well worth you time! This is clearly written at a "how to" level, along with personal dream examples and their interpretations, along with examples of others' dreams and their meanings. The author is not a theorist but one who practices, which means you can learn something immediately applicable and helpful. Biggest take away for me was that most of our dreams deal with our character issues and God wanting to help us grow and mature, which puts dreams in a relational and discipleship context. I've got 4-5 books on interpreting them, and have not seen any of them hit this particular issue as well as she does.

She explains the concepts essential to the study and interpretation of dreams, and provides basic dream symbols to help you learn how to understand and interpret your dreams with a biblical foundation. A wonderful resource for those interested in beginning a deeper study into dreams and their meanings.

Dore does it again!

Beautiful, lyrical,and sensuous images from the Crusades.I am enraprured by the scope,graphic power and compositional greatness of this largely forgotten artist. Though we may look at the politics of the Crusades differently than the Victorians, this book is sure to please any fan of 19th century art. One look at Dore and you see where Cecil B. Demille got much of his inspiration.

Excellent book. This is a must-have for fans of Dore's work. I'm almost tempted to buy a second copy to frame a few pages. I will say that the paper is not exactly bright-white, compared to similar products (The Dore Bible Illustrations, The Dore Illustrations for Dante's Divine Comedy), but I'm not going to take a star away on account of that.

Dore: true Crusader among simple knights!

As a student of the Crusade period, I would be hard-pressed to find illustrations that better represent the time in history, either in literature, art, legend, or historical tales! Dore brings us directly back to a time we long to touch in our fantasies, and gives us an appreciation of what it was like to ride with the Crusaders "back in the day". There are precious few really good artists who truly help us to reach back like Dore. Oh, perhaps Leighton, Waterhouse, and a number of the pre-Raphaelite painters; perhaps Pyle, Wyeth, and a few other illustrators. And of course novelists such as Stevenson, Lamb, Doyle, Pyle once more, Scott, and Haggard, to name just a few--can transport us through their words back to the days when hearts and swords met on the field of battle. But there is something about Dore who truly captures the feel and atmosphere of the time. This book is given 5 stars only because it is not possible to give it 6; a true gem among jewels!

Donovan doesn’t allow whores in his clan because to him everyone should be equal, but convincing Avery that he’s worth more than what he’s always been told he is turns out to be a frustrating task for both of them. Avery doesn’t want to be a whore anymore, but he has never known anything else, and Donovan refuses to treat him like that. They’ll have to heal the scars of Avery’s past abuse if they hope to ever have a future together.

This is what a short story should be!

This is what a short story should be!

We find Avery naked, huddling against the cold and begging for scraps from the hand of the Clan leader. Avery expects to be beaten, raped and more. Donovan is a “new” leader – he doesn’t believe in the old hierarchy.

Donovan works with Avery to build up his self-esteem and trust and eventually the two find one another.

This was ALMOST perfect! I loved the way Avery stuck to his guns – his entire life he’d been abused and no amount of kindness was going to sway him. Donovan did almost everything right in giving him his space and reinforcing his position that Avery didn’t have to live that life anymore.

My only gripe was the time frame, even in a short story we could have been told “and over the next few days/weeks…” to give these guys a somewhat reasonable time frame for Avery to go from cowering in fear to embracing his new position.

But… it’s a relatively small niggle. I mostly loved this to pieces and can’t wait for the next book to come out!

Such fun!

Behavioural conditioning is difficult to break and recondition. Sometimes it is a necessity because the conditioning is detrimental to one's health.

Avery is a young dragon shifter who only knows pain, degradation and abuse. As the least powerful shifter, he is at the bottom of the pecking order which means he is always the whore. Whores are abused and treated poorly. When they are no longer attractive, they are discarded like yesterday's garbage. Cast out again, Avery has nowhere to go and may die from starvation, cold and exhaustion.

I am going to be pedantic here. Avery is not a whore. Whores are paid at least a little money. Avery is a sexual slave. He isn't even a slut in my book because he doesn't want to give the sex away for free. This little pet peeve aside, the story is depressing. The first in the series, this dragon world is bleak, cruel and antagonistic. There also seems to be only male dragons which is a little odd as it begs the question, where do they come from? How does one become a dragon shifter if there are no females? How do they procreate? Speaking of procreating, let's discuss the sex scenes. From an erotic scene perspective, there is a hint of kink. None of it is arousing for me because Avery is so bloody damaged. Donovan is noble and trying to do the right thing. Poor bugger is stuck with blue balls.

The characters are simplistic and easy to understand. A reader only feels pity for Avery. He is like an abused dog. He flinches in response to sudden movements. He cowers into himself. It just about breaks a reader's heart how demoralized and defiled he has been. As with all abused animals and humans, it takes a long time to break free of this mentality. Lucky for Avery, he found a clan with a strong and gentle leader--Donovan. This relationship-driven storyline is sweet if a bit frustrating. Ms. Ricci does a nice job of showing Avery's confusion and demonstrating Donovan's patience.

This short story moves at a nice, easy pace. There is an odd tangent regarding Avery's dislike of flying in the cold rain. Not sure if there is supposed to be more tie-in about this point or if it is to once again demonstrate that Avery will put everyone's needs above his own. Still, the happily ever after is a sweet ending for a potential better future. Recommended to m/m paranormal readers who enjoy angst and a loving alpha male.
