BREATHTAKING PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN!

I first read the diaries in the 1970's and have reread them several times since. Anais shows the world the mind, psyche, soul and intellect of a woman seeking to squeeze every little drop out of life that she can. And she does. Her writing is pure poetry and never fails to inspire me. I highly recommend all of her diaries and her fiction. Never before in history has a woman so completely documented her inner life and dreams. Some of the most beautiful writing I've ever read.

A bubble punctured

It took me a long time, but I finally tracked down and read all the volumes of Nin's autobiography. The first time was in the days before Amazon, so it was not easy. At first I loved them. I had already read her novels and short stories. But gradually I got the sense of a person who rewrote her history to make herself look better. That was a disappointment. Then I discovered that she had omitted so much, lied about so much. If she had admitted that this was a reworking of her life I'd have accepted it. But her great claim was that, like Henry Miller, she wrote unadorned truth. I remember Miller and Durrell once describing her as a pathological liar. Then, later, even her sympathetic biographers discovered the same. We did not accept the hoax of J T Leroy (I saw through that one straight away) or James Frey. I now wonder why we should be any kinder to Nin. They are still an interesting read. But they require not a pinch, but a barrel of salt. Sometimes her fiction was more truthful than her journals.

Yes, I know this will be marked down as unhelpful. I do that to less than positive reviews too. But I am a disappointed fan.

I've only recently begun to read Anais Nin. Her writing is simply arresting.
She displays a character that one doesn't encounter these days. I wish I'd known her.
Her work is descriptive, entertaining and thought provoking.

A so so read

I had expected more from this book about the guitars themselves. I felt there was too much rambling and space taken up with bios of artists and bands that endorsed but probably didn't use Epiphones. Also there are a number of inaccuracies in the book. For instance, Paul McCartney got the " red wing" decal in Detroit while playing there. It's a Detroit Red Wing hockey team decal, not a multicolored Philly Flyer decal. I know, I'm from Michigan. My first electric guitar in 1964 was an Epiphone Sorrento in Royal Olive, which was a popular color but the book doesn't show it on anything. Several of the pictures are labeled wrong as well. The stated dates of manufactor are wrong on several guitars. The book seems a hurry up job, not well planned out or researched. The book wants to make you think Epiphone carried Gibson instead of the other way around. Epiphone was always the " step child " of Gibson.

Really Good, but could have been definitive

A good book, but could be significantly improved with
1. More pictures
2. Less bulking up of the text with biographies of artists that have already outlived their 15 minutes (this is only maybe the last 15% of the book, but that ends a good book on a negative note)
3. If you're going to give a list of guitars and prices, make it table-like - perhaps include some pictures (?)
I'd also like to know a lot more about Epiphone's pickups, especially pre-Gibson. Even the mini-humbucker of Gibson gets pretty short shrift in the Duchossoir Gibson book and nothing here. Every other guitar company book recognizes that the pickups are probably THE distinctive part of a classic company's sound. Sure, it's just coil/poles/magnets but then again a guitar is just body & neck.
No discussion of Epiphone amps, but this is the "Guitar" book. However, for the company historian, it couldn't be too hard to dig up some of that info (and pictures - have I mentioned pictures).

However, all in all I did like the book - it's the fact that it gets so close to being definitive that makes it a bit aggravating. So, as much as that is a backhanded compliment of sorts, I'd say if you are at all interested in Epiphone, get this book. Just be prepared to have to go to the Internet to fill in some blanks (like what described guitars might have actually LOOKED like).

This review is based on the kindle version of this book.....
This book had ten 5-star reviews before I bought it. What I just noticed was that none of those 10 reviews were labeled as "verified purchased". This book doesn't seem to have been proof read, or had any sort of editing before being publish. There are grammar errors, bad coding practices, and by chapter 5 the whole project you build up to that point completely falls apart.

The screenshots in the book for the game at the end of chapter 5 looked nothing like what I had so I downloaded the source code from the publishers website and guess what! The screenshots in the book don't match the code by the author either!

This book was clearly rushed and I feel as if I wasted my money on it.

Clear Step-by-Step introduction to 2D sprite programming on iOS

First off, I received an early review copy of the book from Packt. I typically use Packt 'by example' titles to get some practice with new technology. The main quality of this book is that it includes a clear progression of knowledge and skills from introductory Sprite Kit basics to the more advanced example apps. The book can easily serve as a general introduction to 2D sprite programming as well as a practical guide to making your own games on iOS. The code examples are easy enough to follow but as with all developer books, the code might need some tweaking based on your version of Xcode and your machine. I attached a picture of the final app working on my computer as proof that the code works

Although the book provides a chapter on iOS 9 compatibility, I could knock off 1/2 a star because I felt it could do more throughout the book on Swift 2 compatibility and the new features coming in Swift 2. However, it does a great job on introducing basic 2D Sprite programming concepts and combining said topics into a working app.

Few days before the release I was provided with reviewer copy by Packt Publishing. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, because of its concise manner of guiding through SpriteKit’s components, and diligently revealing their dependencies and interactions with structured approach. The book’s clear and uncluttered presentation helped me to develop strong mental map of Sprite Kit’s internal hierarchy.
Coming from OpenGL background, book helped me understand the peculiarities of Sprite-based rendering. The book is invaluable tool for quick familiarization with SpriteKit, Swift and Xcode’s GUI. The book uncovers the framework by creating the example game, but instead of simple “repeat this” instructions, every major concept gets succinct introduction and frequent infographics.
If you need a guide to break into SpriteKit, and develop a solid understanding of SpriteKit framework and Swift, this book fulfills these tasks gracefully.

I love history and enjoyed this book

I love history and enjoyed this book. I grew up near several famous colonial taverns in central NJ/PA, so this was of particular interest to me. I've since seen this book referenced in several other history books, which also attests to it being a well written book from the late 19th century. If you like colonial history, you should like this book.

this is full of great info, to bad you cant get illustration's because that is really what makes this book. better to get a paper back I think but it is still a great read, I live in Illinois and we have a stage coach -inn and tavern that has been turned into a restaurant but top floors are as it would have when a coach stop . hope you can find one.

If you want nothing but plain text, it is ok, but the absence of an index is a handicap to anyone doing research.

About the Author

Michalinos Zembylas is Associate Professor of Educational Theory and Curriculum Studies at the Open University of Cyprus. He is also Visiting Professor and Research Fellow at the Institute for Reconciliation and Social Justice,�University of the Free State, South Africa. He has written extensively on emotion and affect in relation to social justice pedagogies, intercultural and peace education, human rights education and citizenship education. His forthcoming book is titled Emotion and Traumatic Conflict: Re-claiming Healing in Education (Oxford, 2015).

Paul Schutz is currently a professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Texas at San Antonio. His research interests include the nature of emotion, emotional regulation, and teachers’ understandings of emotion in the classroom.
