Five of the most influential and provocative art historians of our time have come together to provide a comprehensive history of art in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries

Art Since 1900 introduces students to the key theoretical approaches to modern and contemporary art. A flexible year-by-year structure and extensive cross-referencing allow teachers and students to pursue a chronological approach and/or to study the currents of art since 1900 by medium, theme, country, or region. This completely updated and expanded third edition contains over 125 essays, each focusing on a crucial event in the history of art from 1900 to the present. Ten new essays cover subjects such as Moscow conceptualism, abstract film, postmodern architecture, and queer art, as well as artists from emerging economies and the impact of the market on current art practice.

Text boxes provide further information on key figures and issues. Five introductions explain the different methods of art history at work in the book. There are two roundtable discussions between the authors, and all reference material has been updated.

Brilliant
By B. Wolinsky
Art Since 1900 opens each chapter with a momentous event in art history, and the first one is Sigmund Freud’s Interpretation of Dreams. Using the events as a springboard, we see how modern art began (according to the authors) with new ideas on thinking. Radical styles in painting actually began years earlier in Paris, with Van Gogh and Gaugin pushing the limits of acceptability, but in this book it was Gustav Klimt’s open defiance of the establishment. Klimt’s dark subject matter is a proof, along with Freud’s work, that Vienna could be a place of rebel thinking. Preceded by artists like Gaugin and Toulousse-Lautrec, known for bizarre colors and strange subject matter, we can deduce that modern art was decades in the making.

Another source of the change in taste, according to the first chapter, is the rejection of clich. Years earlier, Auguste Rodin created his famous Balzac statue as a formless column, with no indication that the subject was a writer (Balzac wears a bathrobe, because he often wrote late at night.) Similarly, Picasso’s Demoiselles D’Avignon removed the original plan to include a sailor (the client) and the medical student with a skull (memento mori). The chapter does not go into detail about the African symbolism in the painting, though it’s discussed in another essay titled Dread, Desire, and the Demoiselles.

The second volume (it’s a two-book set) begins in 1945, when New York City and Chicago were becoming ground zero for the art world. Paris and Vienna were no longer the art capitals of the world, thanks to WWII driving the artists out, but keep in mind that years earlier, Paris and Vienna had pushed out Venice, Florence, and Rome. Where Paris was known for Chagall and Picasso, New York was now home to Pollock, De Koonig, and Mark Rothko, many of whom began in the WPA era. The authors make use of contemporary journalism, with sources from Clement Greenberg and Harold Rosenberg in the chapter on American abstract-impressionism, followed by realism making a comeback.

I’d read a similar book, titled Art Since 1945, back when I was in college. It ended with the 1980’s artists like Harring and Basquiat (both of whom were proteges of Warhol) and Barbara Kruger. In every generation the textbook gets bigger, giving more attention to artists who, fifteen years ago, got no love. Take for instance Nicole Eisenman, whose 1996 works are included here, but would not have been included in this book in 2000.

The Young British Artists are another movement that got more extensive coverage since their 1990’s debut. However, the book’s discussion of their origin is a bit slim, attributing them to Margaret Thatcher’s increased support for business, and the resulting British neuveau-riche class that sponsored Britain’s emerging artists. It is an accepted fact that early 20th century Britain didn’t have millionaires like Guggenheim and Rockefeller who bankrolled modern art, so Britain’s artists were a bit slower in their emergence. It wasn’t until the 90’s that the new British upper class would sponsor artists like Damien Hirst and Rachel Whiteread. I remember the YBA show at the Brooklyn Museum back in 2000, where Charles Saachi displayed his collection, aptly titled Sensation, as a way of introducing NY’s audiences to his country’s artists. It was like The Armory show 90 years earlier, where American audiences were introduced to Europe’s modern art. However, I was not ignorant of the YBA before the Saachi show; I’d seen the Chapman Brothers show at the Gogosian, and Whiteread’s pieces were displayed publicly back in 1994. Mayor Giuliani’s harsh criticism of Chris Offili’s Holy Virgin Mary With Elephant Dung only added to the publicity.

The use of newsworthy events to begin each chapter makes sense, given that history will always be the biggest influence on art, and not the other way around. You have changes in economics, which leads to patronage, and then you have museums that can launch an artist’s career by giving him/her a platform. Not discussed in the book, though I would like to see it, is the subject of the artist neighborhoods in different countries. New York City had Soho, and I don’t know what the equivalent would be in London or Beijing. Chinese artist like Ai Wei Wei come at the end of the book, with a small entry, though Asian artists have been gaining ground for 15 years.

I would read this book alongside Sanctuary (the studios of the YBA) and Dark Matter (how art has gone from commercialism to activism) in order to gain an understanding of the role of art in modern history. The authors make no effort to hide the fact that the scholarship is Eurocentric at the beginning, and US-centered after 1945. However, the USA had the Ashcan school in the years before 1945, with artists like George Bellows and his boxer painting, and then you had Edward Hopper’s streetscapes, but these guys don’t really come into play in the book. They were well-known in the USA, but rarely got any attention in Britain or Europe. I doubt that any of the artwork’s in the Metropolitan Museum’s American Wing are well known outside of the USA.

Let me sum up by saying that this book can satisfy an entire course on modern art. It makes great effort to include non-US artists, though there’s little attention to artists from Latin America, the Middle East, Australia, or Africa. That could change, however, and I imagine this book will need a third volume in the next decade.

Brilliant Balletic Comedy & Translation
By Jon Linden
In both these plays, Wilbur brings Moliere's true genius to real life. Previous translations of Moliere's work pale by comparison to Wilbur's brilliant translations. It was my feeling, that would Moliere by alive today, and writing in American English, he would write the way Wilbur translated it.
In comparison to prose translations in the past, Wilbur, past US Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner, truly gives the reader the real feeling of Moliere's "Balletic Comedy" style, as Moliere used his poetry and comedy to make complex and serious points about life of "regular" people, as opposed to royalty such as Shakespeare concentrated on, and so many other playwrites of the past.
In reading Wilbur's translations, one can virtually imagine the cast prancing and mincing across the stage as they humorously render these rhyming couplets at each other, and the audience. The true genius of both Moliere and Wilbur is illustrated most profoundly and strikingly in these translations. Any true lover of Moliere, and even those who have never read him before, should treat themselves to Wilbur's translations for a Moliere experience, that is unparalleled in any other versions previously published.

The misanthrope and the religious hypocrite
By Shalom Freedman
Moliere's leading characters often have one major negative trait which dictates their behavior throughout the play. In this they often seem to be mechanical stock characters and not flesh- and - blood living human beings. In 'The Misanthrope' Alceste believes he must tell the truth to everyone he sees. This is despite the advice of his best friend Philinte. Alceste alienates everyone. At the same time he is madly in love with with Celimene. He wants her to go away with him to retreat from hypocritical society. She however flirtatious and light - minded prefers society to him. The play closes with Philinte trying to persuade Alceste not to leave society completely.

In the second play in this volume the leading character is a religious hypocrite. He finds his way into the heart and mind of a wealthy gentleman Orgon and dominates his family life. Tartuffe steals his money , leads Orgon to disinherit his son and offer his daughter to Tartuffe in marriage. Tartuffe attempts to seduce Orgon's wife. Orgon is convinced to hide under a table where he overhears Tartuffe's entreaties. Orgon then decides to eject him from the family but cannot. It is only with the intercession of the king that the religious hypocrite is stopped. This play raised a furor in its day and the Church opposed its production. Moliere's patron Louis XIV allowed its production in private but only after five years allowed its public staging.

In both these plays Moliere viciously satires the human propensity to remain fixed and static in one's own character, and reaction to reality. He derides human folly but always with the redeeming grace of laughter.

For the contemporary reader of the work who does not feel the special force of the work in its original language there often may seem something forced and artificial in the work. Moliere's work it seems to me gain much from being staged and to know them truly reading alone is not enough.

From Publishers Weekly
With graceful, sensitive prose, Yuko Tsushima tells eight slice-of-life stories of lonely, burdened contemporary Japanese women who seek "a sense of well-being that captured . . . what the word happiness meant." In "South Wind," Akiko takes a lover; her husband and daughter leave her. She bears the lover's child and raises him on her own, with occasional visits from the father. The title story features another single mother, "hemmed in by the cracker crumbs, plastic blocks, empty juice cans, underwear and socks that littered the room," who takes her two children to see a beautiful beach but instead finds a seashore strewn with rubbish. In "The Chrysanthemum Beetle," Izumi suspects that her boyfriend has another lover; she finally confronts him and walks out. Then the other woman calls and asks to meet her. Tsushima (Child of Fortune) conveys the passion and pain of her characters through her vivid accounting of the details of everyday life.

From Library Journal
Tsushima has been honored in her ) native Japan for her fiction. One novel ( Child of Fortune ) has been translated, but this is her first collection of short stories to appear in English. These eight stories all deal with women facing some kind of social problem or predicament or attempting to define their own identity. The situations reflect Japanese social mores, sometimes at odds with ours, but will be meaningful to readers from any culture where women are attaining new freedoms. The translation occasionally vacillates between American and British English, but the overall rendering is smooth and appropriately colloquial. Highly recommended both as literature and as social comment. Donald J. Pearce, Univ. of Minnesota, Duluth, Lib. Reviewers with sound critical judgment 8 and an interest in literary fiction, experimen tal writing, and/or fiction in translation are invited to send two sample reviews to Bar bara Hoffert, The Book Review.

Great Stories of Modern Japan From A Woman's Perspective
By A Customer
These stories by the daughter of famous Japanese author Osamu Dazai are poignant and haunting. They describe experiences of modern day Japanese women - working women, mothers, sisters, aunts, lovers, ex-wives widows - in ways that should explode the vague stereotypes or incomplete images most Americans hold about the Japanese. The writing is direct and yet elegant in its spare prose. Not upbeat, by any means, but many of these stories will stay with you for quite awhile.

Manhwa—Korean for comics—is fast becoming the next big craze in Asian comics. Many fans of manga don't realize that their favorite comics, like Priest, Ragnarock, and Island, are actually manhwa, not Japanese manga. This tutorial helps artists master the differences between manga and manhwa, including less focus on big eyes and more on expressions and personality, replacing spiky hair with a more natural look, and drawing characters that don't typically possess magical powers but are instead fierce fighters made of flesh and blood. Artists learn through a step-by-step process how to draw the entire range of manhwa characters-from the extreme fighting-machine heroes and giant beasts to the sexy women, anti-heroes, and evil warlords.

I was approached to work on this book
By Ryan A Estrada
So many reviews state that this book seems just like a how to draw Manga book. Well, perhaps I can shed some light on why.

So one day, back in like 2003, I get an e-mail from Mr. Hart.
"Hello, I am making a new book about how to draw manhwa (Korean comics) and when I Googled `Korean' and `comics' I found your site. Would you be interested in providing some illustrations for the book?
Christopher Hart"

I reply a couple of hours later:
"Hello Mr Hart,
Yes, I am a comic artist who has spent time living in Korea.
I would be happy to discuss the details of the project more."
(I sign with my name and portfolio address)

He replies the next day:
"Who is this?
How did you get the address, and how did you know about my next book? If you want to work with me, you have to submit a portfolio. do you have any work online?
Christopher Hart"

Note that this was pre-Gmail days, so the complete text of his e-mail to me was included in my response. I respond:
"Hello Mr. Hart,
I think there may have been some misunderstanding, you contacted me about your book, and I was simply responding to your message. My portfolio is at (I include the link again). You mentioned you had already seen my site, and that is why you contacted me."

His response:
"What is this? I don't understand what I am looking at. I thought you were applying for a position drawing manhwa? This doesn't look anything like manhwa!!!"

Me:
"Hello again Mr. Hart,
As I said, I am not a Korean manhwa artist. I am an artist who has spend time in Korea. And I am not applying for anything, I am answering your e-mail. But since you are looking for something in a manhwa style, here are some quick samples.
(I attached some drawings of popular Korean characters, like Dooly the Dinosaur)

Chris responds:
"What is this? This doesn't look anything like Korean comics. I was looking for something like this."
(He attaches a page from a Japanese comic book, complete with japanese text)

Me:
"What you attached is manga. While there is are a lot of Korean comics drawn in a manga style, there are many other original styles that are exclusive to Korea."

Chris:
"Please stop e-mailing me."

And that was the end of my interaction with Mr. Christopher Hart.

Manhwa nothin'.
By Onandifer
I got this book because I draw manga but decided that I wanted to do something a little different. The first few pages were great! They clearly showed the differences between manga and manhwa. Then he gives you a lot of pages for you to copy the drawings on and practice. Great idea! Except that its virtually all manga/anime stlye. It seemed just like some of the author's other how to draw manga books. I got this book because I DID NOT want a manga book but that's exactly what it turned out to be. If you're interested in drawing MANGA, this book is actually not too bad.

No. Just no.
By Amazon Customer
As a long-time reader of both Manga and Manhwa, I am very familiar with the various common styles they employ. Not only is the majority of art in this book terrible, it is not remotely Manhwa. I saw no heavier eyelashes, angular and sharper styles, stretched anatomy--all very common hallmarks of manhwa. Seriously. Take a moment to simply google "manhwa" and compare what you see to this junk. It is not remotely smiliar, unless the manhwa artist is actively employing a style closer to Japanese manga.

As I've improved in my own art over the years, I've realized how truly terrible Chris Hart's books are. Don't buy them. They will only teach you how to copy various pictures done by multiple artist in varying styles. Find a quality art book and then develop your own style. Draw from life. If you like Asian styles, dig up the How to Draw Manga series (the real one) that is translated from the Japanese series. Those are good. This is crap.

My order never came in. When I placed this order, I read the reviews and believed my order would come in just as quick as the others. After 2 weeks, I knew something was wrong bc I have never had problems with Amazon or the sellers. I emailed textbookie many times and although the response was quick, it was not the one I wanted. I had to end up paying $60.00 for another book bc I almost failed a summer class waiting for this book that never showed up. I would not purchase from them again... only order if you are not desperately needing the item you are purchasing. You may not get it.

Frighteningly fascinating! Yuval Harrari writes in a straight talk no bs style with crystal clear logic and a examples to back up his theory. He emphasizes that this book is by no means an apocalyptic prophecy about the future but describes many possibilities so if we don't like it we can do something about it. Not a day go by ever since I read this book over last xmas break that I don't think about this book and what does it mean for me and my little baby's future.

I'm not usually one to enjoy history books. However, this is the exception. Harari writes in a way that is interesting, amusing, clear, and concise. The book does an excellent job at reminding you of its point through summary and argumentative writing. It also covers a broad range of thought, ranging from psychological questions, to ethical conundrums, to philosophical puzzles, to scientific evaluation. The book thoroughly addresses it's argument, admits it's limitations, and makes you think. Read it.

This project really proves the worth of a simple lathe fitted with only a face-plate and centers. You’ll make some valuable accessories for the lathe and you’ll be a better machinist when this one is done.
Now that you have a machine shop you need accessories and tooling. You also need practice on your new equipment so here’s a book full of projects.
Build a four jaw chuck, a steady rest and other useful tooling. Build a worm-wheel dividing head and add change gears to the lathe so that you can cut accurate screw threads from 8 to 80 per inch, both right and left hand and internal and external. Make your own reamers and learn how the master machinist of 100 years ago made his handful of tools do any job he was assigned to do.
These are all items that many of us can’t afford early in our shop careers, but you can make them yourself now that you have a machine shop.

a gem in the rough
By Travisji Corcoran
I've read all of the books in Gingery's series, and I give the same review to all of them:
An amazing testament to one man's creativity and hard work, and an inspiration to other budding machinists and tinkerers. The instructions are relatively easy to follow, but be aware that the production values (lay out, graphics, editting) are quite rough.

Good book, dividing head is a useful tool
By C. Toombs
This, like the remainder of the series, is a good book on building the particular items. It gives step by step detail on building the accessories and requires no specialized tools that you can't make yourself. It does use the some of the tools from the previous books, as the series is meant to be done in order. Probably the most useful item is the dividing head. If you have built the Gingery lathe, there are several useful items for that, including a four jaw chuck and change gears. As with the remainder of the Gingery books, it gives step by step details on both construction and techniques for building the mill, and gives you’re mind some stimulation in the design and building departments. You can do a web search and find examples of these accessories built and operating. There is also a Yahoo Group devoted to the Gingery machines if you need further inspiration.

Worldmaking: The Art and Science of American Diplomacy, by David Milne

A new intellectual history of U.S. foreign policy from the late nineteenth century to the present

Worldmaking is a compelling new take on the history of American diplomacy. Rather than retelling the story of realism versus idealism, David Milne suggests that U.S. foreign policy has also been crucially divided between those who view statecraft as an art and those who believe it can aspire to the certainty of science.

Worldmaking follows a cast of characters who built on one another’s ideas to create the policies we have today. Woodrow Wilson’s Universalism and moralism led Sigmund Freud to diagnose him with a messiah complex. Walter Lippmann was a syndicated columnist who commanded the attention of leaders as diverse as Theodore Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, and Charles de Gaulle. Paul Wolfowitz was the intellectual architect of the 2003 invasion of Iraq―and an admirer of Wilson’s attempt to “make the world safe for democracy.” Each was engaged in a process of worldmaking, formulating strategies that sought to deploy the nation’s vast military and economic power―or sought to retrench and focus on domestic issues―to shape a world in which the United States would be best positioned to thrive.

Tracing American statecraft from the age of steam engines to the age of drones, Milne reveals patterns of worldmaking that have remained impervious to the passage of time. The result is a panoramic history of U.S. foreign policy driven by ideas and by the lives and times of their authors.

Review

“David Milne tells the story of the hundred or so years when a sequence of public intellectuals shaped the discourse and practice of U.S. foreign affairs with confidence and lan―and guided America to its place as the world’s No. 1 power . . . That Mr. Milne succeeds, and brilliantly, is due in no small part to the vivacity and jargon-free clarity of his prose. But he also has a clever, thoughtful thesis that, while developed with great brio, he is careful not to overstate.” ―Richard Aldous, The Wall Street Journal

“[Milne] offers up detailed and often surprisingly moving portraits of nine prominent American foreign policy thinkers, from Alfred Thayer Mahan and George Kennan to Henry Kissinger and, finally, Barack Obama. Each portrait is rich in detail, contextualizing its subject’s understanding of America’s role in the world and offering a glimpse into the debates and dilemmas that have troubled policymakers for a century or more.“ ―Rosa Brooks, The Washington Post

“An account of American foreign policy at once dense with information yet written with such elegant lan that the theory and practice of statecraft becomes compellingly readable. Milne brings to life nine leading figures in the development of American thinking about the nation’s role in the world, weaving formative moments in their biographies with the policies they advocated.” ―David Luhrssen, Shepherd Express

“Remarkable . . . David Milne scrutinizes the work of nine Americans who, beginning in the late 19th century, shaped their country’s relationship with the rest of the world . . . His portraits are detailed, clearly the product of enormous amounts of research, and the result is a mini-encyclopedia about the philosophical foundations of America’s foreign policy . . . A valuable addition to the literature of diplomacy.” ―Philip Seib, Dallas Morning News

“[Worldmaking?‘s] careful historical accounts are rich in insight and provide extraordinary contextual breadth." ―Cameron Munter, Foreign Affairs

“Insightful.” ―Michael Ignatieff, The New York Review of Books

“The overall arc of [Worldmaking] is fascinating, showing how the play of ideas and politics has worked out over more than a century, with some of the most critical episodes in modern history as main episodes in the plot . . . A well-documented, full-scale overview of some key makers of modern history.” ― Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“A panoramic intellectual history of U.S. foreign policy from the nation's emergence as a major maritime power in the late nineteenth century to the present . . . Thanks to the detail and care Milne takes in describing his subjects' backgrounds, the more intriguing narrative that emerges is about the intimate yet fraught relationship between the academy and the levers of power. This is a timely, fascinating work.” ―Brendan Driscoll, Booklist

“This is an outstanding book. As an intellectual history of the drivers in U.S. foreign policy, it is the best one available. But it is also a superb overview of the lives of some of the key creators of America's position in the world.” ―Odd Arne Westad, S.T. Lee Professor of U.S.-Asia Relations, Harvard University

“A marvelous achievement. David Milne gives us not merely a richly textured and striking collective portrait of some of the most important figures in modern American diplomacy and statecraft; he also explains, as few others have, how the United States rose to its unrivaled position on the world stage--and what it means for international affairs today. An altogether splendid book.” ―Fredrik Logevall, Laurence D. Belfer Professor of International Affairs, Harvard University

“Is U.S. foreign policy a science or an art? In this beautifully written, uncommonly wise history, David Milne shows that it can be both. Ideas, as much as material forces or strategic necessity, shape America's approach to the world. Milne demonstrates beyond any doubt the importance of the intellectuals who put these ideas into action--for better or worse. A brilliant and important book.” ―Andrew Preston, author of Sword of the Spirit, Shield of Faith: Religion in American War and Diplomacy

“Well-documented, insightful, and easy to understand, this analysis is a must-read for anyone interested in this topic.” ―Daniel Blewett, Library Journal (starred review)

One of the finest books on foreign policy I have ever read.
By David Becker
Mine's book uses deep analysis of the thinking of representative American foreign policymakers and public from the 1890s (Alfred Thayer Mahan) to the present (Barack Obama) to unravel the tangled threads of ideas and concepts that animated US responses to international crises from the war with Spain to the advent of ISIS. He points how their successes and failures have created analogies to later situations that policymakers used to help frame their recommendations--sometimes successfully, often not so much. From all this Milne concludes that Obama's "pragmatic realism" and it's attendant rejection of grand strategy is the best approach for securing American national interests and moral values in today's uncertain world, not least because it lacks the power and capacity to create a new world order in its own image.

Neocons and believers in American exceptionalism will dislike this book intensely. But they will not find it easy, if they remain true to the historical record rather than twist it to ideological purposes, to refute its arguments. An outstanding book and a must-read for students and practitioners of foreign policymaking.

The good, the bad, and the ugly of U.S. foreign policy
By Eric C. Petersen
Studiously researched, well written, and most informative covering the "big thinkers" on U.S. foreign policy for the last century-plus. A common theme is how much Washington has been invested in the past, obscuring a reasoned view of the future. One example might be the start of the Bush II administration when the Defense Policy Guideline was being drawn up: After the downfall of the USSR in 1991, the Clinton era saw restrained military budgets - the peace dividend, and, in Clinton's last year, a budget surplus. With the insertion of the Vulcans and neocons at the start of the Bush administration, a new threat matrix had to be invented to justify goosing up the military budget. Sundry were cooked up - missile defense against a renaissant Russia, the WMD threat from Saddam, etc. In an April 2001 meeting, Richard Clarke, the national coordinator for security infrastructure protection and national security, greatly irritated Wolfowitz for suggesting al-Qaida be put a the top of the threat list: In 1993 Ramzi Yousef had detonated a truck bomb in the basement of the World Trade Center hoping to topple one tower into the other, killing a quarter of a million. Subsequent embassy attacks in Africa and then the USS Cole clearly showed the terrorist group had the USA in its sights. To quote from the book: "Clarke replied that al-Qaeda plans major acts of terrorism against the U.S.," Clarke warned. "It plans to overthrow Islamic governments and set up a radical multinational Caliphate, and then go to war with non-Muslim states...They have published all of this and sometimes, as with Hitler in Mein Kampf, you have to believe that these people will actually do what they say they will do." Wolfowitz replied testily, "I resent any comparison between the Holocaust and this little terrorist in Afghanistan." Then again, LBJ didn't see any problems in defeating North Vietnam, a "pissant little country."

Understand the Threads of American Foreign Policy
By Jon Mertz
David Milne has written a book for the ages, one which will be studied to understand the linkages in foreign policy and the impact individuals have through different presidents. Worldmaking will become a key part of political science college courses, I believe. The foreign policy threads that weave through time are essential to understand.

There are a number of elements that I really like about Worldmaking. The first is how non-elected individuals have a sustaining influence on our foreign policy. Whether adversarial or complimentary in thought, certain philosophies continue to build or recapture attention and pursuit. Elected leaders make the decisions, but there is an underlying foundation of individuals who have influenced policies and actions.

The second is the tug between realists, idealists, and pragmatists The latter may still be developing while leveraging the other two. The stories of thought through our history show the art and science of foreign policy. A fascinating look at the challenges and interwoven nature of how to lead through world power shifts and challenges.

If you seek a solid understanding of American foreign policy, read this book. A greater awareness of the political thought behind decisions pursued will be realized. Like I said, I see this book being used in college classrooms, and it should be. More than this, anyone looking to understand foreign policy debates and considerations should spend the time to read this well-written book. It is time to raise our national awareness on foreign policy, a responsibility of being an educated citizen.
