The Book of Disquiet (Penguin Classics), by Fernando Pessoa

Fernando Pessoa was many writers in one. He attributed his prolific writings to a wide range of alternate selves, each of which had a distinct biography, ideology. and horoscope. When he died in 935, Pessoa left behind a trunk filled with unfinished and unpublished writings, among which were the remarkable pages that make up his posthumous masterpiece, The Book of Disquiet, an astonishing work that, in George Steiner's words, "gives to Lisbon the haunting spell of Joyce's Dublin or Kafka's Prague."

Published for the first time some fifty years after his death, this unique collection of short, aphoristic paragraphs comprises the "autobiography" of Bernardo Soares, one of Pessoa's alternate selves. Part intimate diary, part prose poetry, part descriptive narrative, captivatingly translated by Richard Zenith, The Book of Disquiet is one of the greatest works of the twentieth century.

From Publishers Weekly
When Pessoa died in 1935, a few years short of 50, he left behind a trunk of mostly unpublished writing in a variety of languages; his Lisbon publishers and variously translators are still sifting them. This perpetually unclassifiable and unfinished book of self-reflective fragments was first published in Portuguese in 1982, and it is arguably Pessoa's masterpiece. Four previous English translations, all published in 1991, were compromised either by abridgement, poor translation or error-laden source texts. While he's now a Pessoa veteran-having edited and translated Fernando Pessoa & Co.: Selected Poems, the 1999 PEN Award for Poetry in Translation winner-Zenith's first pass at this book was one of the four misses. He bases this new translation on his own Portuguese edition of 1998, and has done an admirable job in bringing out the force and clarity in Pessoa's serpentine and sometimes opaque meditations. Pessoa often wrote as various personae (as Pessoa & Co. carefully demonstrated); Disquiet is no exception, being putatively the work of "Bernardo Soares, assistant bookkeeper in the city of Lisbon." Thus it is impossible to ascribe the book's anti-humanist logophilia directly to the author: "I weep over nothing that life brings or takes away, but there are pages of prose that have made me cry." That is just one of many permutations of similar sentiments, but the genius of Pessoa and his personae is that readers are left weighing each and every such sentence for sincerity and truth value.

About the Author
Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935) was born in Lisbon and brought up in Durban, South Africa. He returned to Lisbon in 1905. A prolific writer, ascribing his work to a variety of personas or heteronyms, Pessoa published little in his lifetime and supported himself by working as a commercial translator. Although acknowledged as an intellectual and a poet, his literary genius went largely unrecognised until after his death

It's truly a lifetime gift for those who enjoy the pleasures of being an introvert and student of ...
By Lewis Baker
Now and then a book of creative genius floats up out of the ocean of literature. This is one of those special books, in this case the Joyce or Kafka of Portugal who never published during his lifetime. Now we have this jewel of reflective thoughts and feelings about the imaginative writer's life, his opinions on world literature, his thoughts on literally everything in his quiet reflective life. It's an inner journey into the mind of a literary genius who shares his thoughts and insights in a journal of meditations. Pessoa was a man of solitude and loneliness but he was not miserable overall. He worked at an office job and wrote many books and stories under various pennames who were different personalities with their own literary styles. Most of what he wrote was not published in his lifetime and this protected him from the distractions of literary fame. Sample the book first and if it doesn't draw you into his reflective literary world on life's ups and downs, move on; but if you are drawn immediately into his thinking and feeling about life and literature and the joys of solitude and anonymity, you will want to read the entire wondrous gift of this complex solitary philosopher of the life of the storytelling artist. It's truly a lifetime gift for those who enjoy the pleasures of being an introvert and student of human experience. Try it. You'll know almost immediately this book will be a friend for life, solace for the quiet meditative times. As a writer I was charmed in an instant. Like dipping into a deep complex beautiful happy sad diary of a human singularity, a literary genius quietly reawakening his life's most poignant thoughts and feelings about a beautiful mind that has come and gone and left this gift of remembrances and reflections.

Here is the antidote. (To be taken in tincture.)
By Guttersnipe Das
In India there are bitter vegetables people eat for their health -- to ward off diabetes and counter the effects of a diet over-high in refined sugars. When I first lived in India, I hated those vegetables. Now I like them best of all. “Bitter” is not always a negative adjective. It may also restore life. It can serve as an antidote. There is something similar about The Book of Disquiet -- a book about failure, tedium and disconnection that is repeatedly beautiful and compelling, even life-giving.

Please excuse me for quoting a blurb. It seems to me exactly right. John Lancaster wrote, “In a time which celebrates fame, success, stupidity, convenience and noise, here is the perfect antidote, a hymn of praise to obscurity, failure, intelligence, difficulty and silence.” If you, too, are spooked or nauseated by a world in which people go around trumpeting their own busyness and importance, reciting what appear to be advertisements for themselves, then this book may well feel like an antidote -- as well as a drastically more honest assessment of life, the way it actually feels, as opposed to how it is supposed to feel.

If I may give advice, I strongly recommend using this book as a “tincture”, just a few pages at a time. I do not believe Pessoa would be offended even if you set it in the bathroom to accompany intestinal disquiets. As Zenith points out in his introduction, reading at random is actually ideal. I read this book over six months and was glad of its company -- but I think, if I’d sat down and tried to read through it in a week, I might have found it insufferable. You could O.D. on ennui. Taken slowly in small doses however, it is brilliant bitter company.

Disquieting Semi-Fiction of Genius
By Wordsworth
"B of D" is a work of pure genius written in gloriously lyrical, existential prose: it wants to be poetry and, at times, it is.

Pessoa is a profoundly introspective and honest writer who defined existential themes based upon his frank study of his own life and dreams: it's possible that Pessoa is the most honest writer who ever lived. He is highly self-critical, self-effacing and suffers from the "disquiet" of his simple life as a bookkeeper in Lisbon. He wrote "B of D" in that richly germinal literary era in Europe of Proust and Joyce.

He composed 481 fragments about the absurdity of life by which he means the inability of man to understand his own existence.

"Each of us is a speck of dust that the wind lifts up and then drops."

Pessoa's disquieting themes eventually grew into the philosophical worldview claimed by the existentialists but he was an existentialist before many of them. Pessoa writes with the passion of Nietzsche. He is Camus before Camus. He has Kafka's rich sense of the absurd. He experiences daily Sartre's nausea.

I devoured every word of "B of D" by Pessoa who had the misfortune to remain largely undiscovered and unread until long after his death. His work is existential in the genre of Camus or Sartre ("I think, therefore, I am a mustache.") He is dark, at times, but his introspection is oceanic in its breadth, depth and turbulent existential Angst.

His writing has been described as "semi-fiction" and "anti-literature" by his translator. Great writers inevitably challenge the logic of traditional syntax as well as the genres in which they write to transform their genres by the genius of their innovative literary styles which become legacies in themselves.

Pessoa writes in fragments which are neither fiction nor poetry but are autobiographical and as such show his disconnect both with life and his own art -- there is no real flow between one fragment and the next like life itself in his existential worldview. He considered his life "an intermission with band music."

He also wrote in heteronyms under several noms de plume as if to say he couldn't really even attest to his own single identity as a writer. His fragments are deep, consuming, intellectual dives into his own everyday life. Normally, autobiography is a sign of an immature writer, which Pessoa clearly is not. He writes about his dull job as an accountant among Lisbon's streets and his sightings while smoking at outdoor cafes as well as about thunderstorms, solitude, dreams, the absurdity and futility of life, art, sex, JJ Rousseau and his work.

My only criticism of Pessoa comes from his odd observations and poor advice about sex. His translator, Richard Zenith, believes it was possible that Pessoa died a virgin. I make it a practice never ever to take advice on sex from priests, nuns and lifelong virgins.

Richard Zenith's translation is truly luminous and he brings rich nuance into the discourse of every line. Like my copy of "The Recognitions" by William Gaddis, I have underlined fragments on nearly every page because it is so deeply relevant, honest and compelling in its pure intellectual grandeur.

Here are a few favorite passages which stand out for me from "B of D":

"Irony is the first sign that our consciousness has become conscious and it passes through two stages: the one represented by Socrates, when he says, "All I know is that I know nothing' and the other represented by Sanches, when he says, 'I don't even know if I know nothing.'"

"No one understands anyone else... However much one soul strives to now another, he can know only what is told him by a word -- a shapeless shadow on the ground of his understanding... I love expressions because I know nothing of what they express."

"I don't know the meaning of this journey I was forced to make, between one and another night, in the company of the whole universe... We achieve nothing. Life hurls us like a stone, and we sail through the air saying, 'Look at me move.'"

"The only attitude worthy of a superior man is to persist in an activity he recognizes is useless, to observe a discipline he knows is sterile, and to apply certain norms of philosophical and metaphysical thought that he considers utterly inconsequential."

"All life is a dream. No one knows what he's doing, no one knows what he wants, no one knows what he knows. We sleep our lives, eternal children of Destiny. That's why, whenever this sensation rules my thoughts, I feel an enormous tenderness that encompasses the whole of childish humanity, the whole of sleeping society, everyone, everything. It's an immediate humanitarianism, without aims or conclusions, that overwhelms me right now. I feel a tenderness as if I were seeing with the eyes of a god. I see everyone as if moved by the compassion of the world's only conscious being. Poor hapless men, poor hapless humanity! What are they all doing here?"

He worked uselessly every business day for a brute capitalist and recognized by night that his writing was utterly hopelessly, inscrutably and irretrievably futile. The miracle, and the sense of this should not be lost upon you, is that every day he still writes anyway like Van Gogh painting despite making only one sale in his lifetime.

I recognized Pessoa instantly from the first few fragments of his life in "B of D": I am Pessoa. And he is also you.

"Book of Disquiet" is life changing. I can't remember ever having been so disappointed to see a book come to an end: it's that good. I implore you to read this immortal literary work of genius by Pessoa. It may be absurd, and even futile, to do so but sometimes the best answer to both is simply to be just as absurd.

From School Library Journal
Gr 3–5—The denizens of Firefly Hollow deal with loss, maturation, and friendship in this gentle novel. Firefly wants to fly to the moon. Cricket wants most to be the catcher in a baseball game like his hero, Yogi Berra. The miniature giant Peter (a human child) wants his best friend back. These three youngsters help one another to cope with various losses and fears. Watching over them is Vole, an elderly creature who has his own quest to follow. McGhee sensitively portrays the pains of growing up as well as themes of prejudice, death, overcoming fears, and the power of friendship. It is a lot to juggle but the author does it gracefully, effortlessly interweaving the characters' stories. Young readers may not grasp some of the nuances, such as what happened to Peter's best friend. However, readers will root for the appealing characters and enjoy their world. Denise's illustrations are lovely, adding tremendously to the charm of the book. VERDICT Fans of Kate DiCamillo and E.B. White will enjoy this charming tale of unlikely inter-species friendships.—B. A story of hopes and dreams and an unlikely group of friends
By Miss Barbara
Firefly Hollow is a charming story about dreams and aspirations told from the viewpoint of a firefly, a cricket, a vole and a miniature giant named Peter.

Firefly is a youngster who is still learning the rules of living in Firefly Hollow from her Elder. The rules are: 1.) Giants are to be feared; 2.) Giants are the enemies of the firefly nation; and 3.) Giants are to be avoided at all costs. Firefly's dream is to fly to the moon.

Cricket lives nearby and goes to school where he learns - Telling temperature; High jumping; and fear of giants. His dream is to play baseball and be a catcher like Yogi Berra.

Vole is a river vole, the last of his kind. He is the keeper of memories and he dreams of sailing downstream to where the river meets the sea.

Peter is a mini-giant who lives with his parents in the valley and is lonely because he's lost his friend. He is able to communicate with firefly and cricket although his parents think these are imaginary friends.

And so the story is set and we have an unlikely group who help and support each other with their dreams. Author Alison McGhee has written a wonderful book for children aged 8 -12 to read for themselves or a bit younger with the help of an adult. The chapters are short and it is perfectly paced for a bedtime story. Artist Christopher Denis has salted the book with charming illustrations that add to the story. The characters become real and soon the reader is caught up in their tale of ambitions and seemingly impossible goals - but cheering them on all the same.

A new classic
By Dienne
I had surgery a little more than a week ago and this book has been the perfect book to cuddle up with during my recovery period (at times when the meds leave my head clear enough to read at all, that is). Although the book is somewhat on the thick and potentially intimidating side for the younger end of the recommended age range, it is actually very easy reading with large margins and a fair amount of space between lines. The story is easy to follow and engage with, even for younger (or, in my case, medicated) readers.

The story opens with Firefly (who is, of course, one of many fireflies, but apparently the only one named Firefly?) who is a bit more adventurous than her fellow juvenile fireflies. As a baby, she fell out of the nest and Elder (her Elder, as there are many elders) swooped in and saved her. Since then, he has taught her skills beyond her age and sympathetically tolerated her stunts and explorations. He even listens sympathetically when she talks about flying to the moon.

We then meet Cricket (again, the only cricket actually named Cricket, apparently), who is likewise a bit more adventurous than average. He used to like to hop to the edge of the clearing and watch the two miniature giants (young human boys) playing catch. Now he goes off by himself to sing the baseball song that he learned from them.

Both fireflies and crickets are taught from early age to fear the giants. There’s even a Museum of Giant Artifacts that youngsters are taken to to instill that fear, especially when they see The Jar. But Firefly and Cricket have always been rather curious about the giants, especially the miniature ones. Cricket actually sneaks off to visit the Museum, look at the baseball card, and dream about being a catcher. His friend Gloria, who was injured by the giants, is, perhaps ironically, the only one who supports Cricket’s dreams.

Cricket and Firefly have each been watching (or listening, as the case may be) to each other and finally Firefly gets up the nerve to go and meet this singular Cricket. The two of them hit it off right away and soon they find themselves leaving their respective nations behind to live their own adventure. They meet one of the miniature giants, but, sadly, the other has gone away. Peter eventually befriends the two little creatures, while they live with another friend Vole, the last of the river vole nation.

Each character is dealing, in his or her own way, with issues of connection vs. freedom; exploring one’s dreams vs. conforming to the dictates of the society one was born to. The story veers perilously close, at alternate times, to being rather trite and simplistic in both directions, but ultimately manages to sail between these two perils to create a nuanced amalgamation of both and to create a delightful story with a unique twist on the universal coming of age theme. Highly recommended for not only the target audience but for older readers as well (including adults) for its timeless yet current and fully satisfying message and the delightful characters who deliver it.

Firefly Hollow
By - A
Firefly Hollow by Alison McGhee is the sweetest story about following your dreams. Of course following your dreams with the closest of friends makes it even more special. Four unlikely friends get together to try to make their dreams come true and face their fears. As long as they have each other, they have it all.

Firefly doesn't want to stay behind with the other fireflies. Not at all. Firefly wants to follow her dreams beyond The Hollow and be the very best flier ever. Firefly wants to fly to moon! Even if her elders have warned her of the dangers. Especially the giants out there and has been told to stay away. This is something Firefly wants more than anything.

Cricket has been told to stay away from the giants, too. But he's been to the edge of the river and seen two mini giants playing catch. Cricket doesn't just want to sing the baseball song, he wants to catch a ball too. If he stays in Cricket Nation, he'll never follow his dreams and play ball like Yogi Berra.

Vole is a River Vole and the very last of his kind. He wants more than anything to set sail from the river to the sea. Poor Vole doesn't seem to have the courage.

When Firefly, Cricket, and Vole become friends with Peter (the mini giant/little boy) who is very sad to have lost his best friend, they each find a way to make their own dreams come true. Friendship, having the courage to follow your dreams in a big world to become whatever you want to be, and trust are important key points of this adorable story.

I would highly recommend this chapter book to not just the young, but the young at heart. This would be a perfect bedtime story or one to let your child read alone. I loved Firefly Hollow and it will have a permanent place on my bookshelf.

Review
'Colloquial Hebrew: A Complete Course for Beginners' is a fabulous edition to the realm of Hebrew Language pedagogy and self-study guides. It will be a boon to those engaged in the self-study of Hebrew as well as teachers wishing to introduce colloquial Hebrew to a traditional Hebrew language course.

tackles all these issues, ensuring that you come away from the course speaking like a 'native' rather than like a grammarian..
–Rochelle Caviness, The Jewish Eye

Altogether an excellent contribution to the study of Hebrew.

Exceptional but error-ridden content
By E. Goldberg
I share everyone's enthusiasm for this book: it's one of the most clearly-written, user-friendly guide for adults to learn Hebrew that I've yet found. I've spent many evenings and four weekends completing this book, and it's helped bring back the language fluency that I had as a child.

I've taken off a star, however, because of the inexcusable number of errors in the answer key and in the book. Sometimes, portions of exercises are inexplicably missing entirely from the answer key; in other cases, the answer key includes misspelled or sporadically different words compared to the actual exercise, and vice-versa. The CD recordings also vary words and even omit entire sentences from the in-book dialogs.

The authors also have a frustrating tendency to use words in the book that they do not define in the end-of-book dictionary, so it can be sometimes hard to read along. Plan on including a decent Hebrew dictionary along with this book.

The Disc 1 I received was also defective, however, Routledge promptly promised to replace it when asked.

That said, this remains one of the better books, its flaws aside. But it was inexcusable for the publishers to release it without a competent editorial job. "Modern Hebrew for Beginners" is probably your better bet.

I'm very impressed.
By Meirav
I've just received the book, tape and CD combination, and I'm very impressed. Like another reviewer, I am frustrated that after several years of attempting to learn the language, I'm not at the level of facility as I have been after only one or two years of other languages.
The dialogs are spoken by natives, so it helps your pronunciation.
The book and CDs complement one another, but don't totally duplicate the information the other. For example, the book has written exercises and cultural notes, while the CD has an instructor, suggestions about how to use the system, comments and explanations about the dialogue, and role play exercises with prompts.
I really like the fact that the book doesn't assume I'm a college student, and isn't full of vocabulary about dorms, classrooms and libararies, which I'm very unlikely to use, but could pick up if I knew the language.
I highly recommend the edition I bought, which includes CDs and tapes. The CD tracks are portions of each unit, so you can review in smaller chunks. The tapes can be used in special foreign language learning tape players that replay even smaller sections repeatedly.
One note, It's an English book and CD series. The instructor has a standard (BBC) English accent. Some Americans have problems understanding this accent. I was raised bi-culturally, so I don't have this problem. I also think that's likely to be a problem older Americans might have, and younger ones don't.

Not bad, but not very good either
By Gwilym
This is a typical example of a decent cours with some strengths but also some weaknesees.

PROS
+ I like how contemporary it is, the dialoges focus on modern life and do not feel stilted or outdated.
+ The use of both the Hebrew and the Roman alphabet is a nice way to allow people to decide whether to take a more communicative approach and mainly use transliterations or to advance more slowly and learn Hebrew writing as well.

CONS
- It is not particularly extensive. Compared to many other Colloquial courses (Czech, Italian and Icelandic spring to mind), you'll finish this course with a rather limited vocabulary.
- The author commits the cardinal mistake of often using words you haven't learned yet in exercises. After you've tried several times to read the Hebrew, tried to identify it and to translate it, it's rather frustrating to discover that - once again - the reason is that the author has not bothered to include the word.
- The grammar explanations are rather extensive, and that is great, but not well organised. The course makes Hebrew grammar seems more confusing than it is.

Excellent book. Easy to read; hard to put down
By Dennis in Houston
'Once a Warrior King' is an
excellent book. Written by Terry Turner using the pen name David Donovan.
I served on MACV Advisory Team 88 in Ben Tre, Kein Hoa Province, IV Corps, Sept. '68 - Aug. '69.
(That was where 'We had to destroy the town in order to save it.'
A dumb statement which was not true. Some buildings were damaged but were quickly repaired.)
I was fortunate to be at Province headquarers where we were able to live in a decent manner. By comparision, the MAT and District team where Terry Turner served, near the Cambodian border, had very little personal and US military support. It is obvious to me, as a former MACV officer, that the book 'Once A Warrior King' could have only been written by somemone who was actually there. The fact that T. Turner used a pen name is OK. Many of the names in the book were changed for reasons of privacy.
A good book.

Adam and Jesus as leaders
By Dr. Don
P 24 . . . Adam and Jesus were our leaders. Adam in his self-willed disobedience. Contrasted with the self-sacrificing obedience of the Christ. Adam knew the path, he walked on the path with God.

p 29 . . . Adam asserted himself. Christ sacrificed Himself. We are in Adam by birth, in Christ by faith.

P 34 . . . Justification is not just a legal pronouncement. We are justified because of our union with The Christ. Our old self was crucified with Him so we would no longer be enslaved to sin.

p 39 . . . Christ did not only forgive us. He actually died for our sin to destroy our sin once for all.

p 64 . . . A Christian has a complete change of relationship with God. For nothing good resides within me. God the Father condemned our sin that Christ took on so holiness will appear in us.

you can't say he made the material easy. That will never happen with Romans
By Augustus Earl McTavish
I had read that this series of four talks at a Keswick Convention revolutionized Keswick spirituality. Stott makes a lot of sense out of such difficult material as Romans 5 to 8. At the same time, you can't say he made the material easy. That will never happen with Romans! You have to keep working on getting it. This book is long out of print, but of real historical significance and personal value. Perhaps it is incorporated pretty much as is in Stott's book, _The Message of Romans_. I have yet to read that.

About the Author
William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, on England s Avon River. When he was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. The couple had three children an older daughter Susanna and twins, Judith and Hamnet. Hamnet, Shakespeare s only son, died in childhood. The bulk of Shakespeare s working life was spent in the theater world of London, where he established himself professionally by the early 1590s. He enjoyed success not only as a playwright and poet, but also as an actor and shareholder in an acting company. Although some think that sometime between 1610 and 1613 Shakespeare retired from the theater and returned home to Stratford, where he died in 1616, others believe that he may have continued to work in London until close to his death.

The best and most helpful single-volume edition
By Joost Daalder
Students and various e-mail correspondents often ask me which single-volume Shakespeare edition I would recommend, and I never hesitate in naming this one, as I think it has a long lead over its rivals. I have myself used the 1992 printing with amazing frequency both in research and in teaching, and always with advantage.
Why is this the best edition for a reader who wants as much as possible within the confines of a single book? First, it should be pointed out that unannotated editions such as the Oxford Complete Works are all in all of comparatively little use as even expert Renaissance scholars - leave alone inexpert readers - cannot read Shakespeare's language unaided; there are simply far too many words, features of grammar, etc., which a modern reader is certain to interpret inaccurately or not to understand at all. So it is essential to have intelligent and well-informed annotation that will help one to understand the text. Bevington's is extraordinarily good: knowledgeable, precise, and helpfully clear.
Second, an editor needs to be able to produce a responsible modernised text. Shakespeare cannot be understood by many unless he is read in modern spelling, and the punctuation of his period, too, often leads most modern readers astray. Bevington's modernisation of the text is exemplary. Furthermore, his handling of the many thorny textual problems is also outstanding for the knowledge and the judgement that he brings to bear. For example, the Oxford people unwisely and on poor grounds print two separate versions of *King Lear*, and Bevington has been exceptional in rejecting that approach and producing a persuasively and intelligibly "conflated" text (much better, by the way, than the conflated version in the Arden text edited in 1997 by R.A. Foakes).
Most readers of the plays who are not already quite familar with them will want good, perceptive and comprehensive introductions to them, and in this area, too, Bevington excels, demonstrating an awareness of modern approaches and interests without falling victim to trendiness. He offers introductions which are never dull but, however exciting and illuminating, always sensible.
The general introductory and accompanying material made available elsewhere in the book is equally useful, revealing, and accurate; and the book is well produced. It is amazingly cheap for the remarkable value it offers.
This, then, is not only the best single-volume Shakespeare available, but is by any standard as good an edition as anyone could possibly expect. I add that in my personal view Bevington is probably the only scholar at present alive who could have produced so excellent a single-volume edition. Unreservedly recommended. NOTE: this is a specific review of the FOURTH edition, which to my mind is by far the best, and the only one which I unhesitatingly recommend.

The death knell for eclectic texts
By Charles S. Houser
Perhaps, like me, you have held on to the Complete Works of William Shakespeare you've had since college and are wondering if the world really needs yet another edition of the Bard's complete output. Well, the Modern Library edition of the Royal Shakespeare Company's Shakespeare has a lot to recommend it. The text is beautifully set in single column format, making it easier for actors and those who wish to read the text aloud to scan the poetic lines and to distinguish between poetry and prose. Jonathan Bates's General Introduction is comprehensive, engaging, and lively. As with the introductions to the individual plays, Bates gives special attention to the performance traditions from which these plays emerged as well as those which would shape their interpretation over the centuries. This concern for performance issues is also addressed in the "Key Facts" boxes that follow every play introduction. Here the editors summarize the plot, identify the major parts (with percentage of lines and number of speeches assigned to each character, etc.), take a stab at identifying a dates of composition and first performance, and discuss the plays' sources and state of the texts available. There are ample, but not an overwhelming number of footnotes. And these notes, Bates assures us, do not shy away from discussion of Shakespeare's bawdier puns (something that may not be true of your old college textbook). Another real plus is the inclusion of a fragmentary scene from "Sir Thomas More" based on the only manuscript known to be in Shakespeare's own hand.

But the best reason to buy the RSC Shakespeare is because the editors have gone to great lengths to preserve the First Folio (1623) edition of Shakespeare. They have modernized the spelling and punctuation and have read (and corrected) the text against Quarto texts where these exist, but have not recklessly blended Quarto and Folio texts, something most previous editors have done with impunity for generations. The editors make a strong case for the Folio texts being the best versions available and respecting their "purity" makes it possible for readers and those preparing new stagings to grapple with textual variants in a thoughtful and respectful manner. It seems that Shakespearean textual critical work is finally taking on the discipline of biblical criticism. Let's hope the results will be equally illuminating and revolutionary.

A brilliantly simple idea
By Tad Davis
The idea behind this edition is brilliantly simple: produce a modern edition of the First Folio. The editors do not attempt to produce a "definitive" text of Shakespeare. Their goal is more modest: to reconstruct, as closely as possible, the material that Heminges and Condell brought into the printing house in 1623. It is, they say, a snapshot of the playtexts at one stage in their evolution.

The various quarto and octavo editions are used to correct the Folio text (where that is obviously corrupt) but not to supplement it. Passages excised from the Folio are printed here in appendices and textual notes. Plays that didn't appear in the Folio appear in a different format in the back. (So too with the poems and sonnets.) If passages vary in wording between the early editions, the Folio receives precedence, as long as it makes sense.

The notes are also quite extensive about vocabulary and are franker than usual about sexual matters. The notes about historical events are not as extensive as those in the Riverside, but the chronologies, introductions, and other supplementary materials do provide the basic background. The introductions, by Jonathan Bate, are concise and steer a middle course between dramatic / thematic issues on one hand and developmental / textual issues on the other.

Like the Norton Shakespeare, the plays are here printed in single-column format, which greatly aids readability. Unlike the Norton, which prints the plays in approximate chronological order, the plays are printed here in the order they appeared in the First Folio. Highly recommended.
