Newly retired from the FBI and alone after the tragic death of his wife, Cliff Knowles takes up geocaching. While looking for a cache in the mountains he comes across a human skeleton and reports it to the sheriff's office. Then a second body is found - a fresh corpse this time - right after Cliff found another geocache nearby. About the Author
Russell Atkinson served as an FBI Special Agent for 25 years, where hespecialized in high-technology crimes in Silicon Valley. He was thefirst to investigate Raj Rajaratnam, the billionaire hedge fund managerwho was convicted of insider trading in 2011. He was the case agent onthe first federal prosecution in California under the Economic Espionage Act. He worked on several kidnapping cases and has arrested murderersand drug dealers. After retiring from the FBI he practiced law. Withdegrees in mathematics and law he worked for many high-tech firms in the computer industry including IBM, Fairchild Semiconductor, and Netscape. He served as President of the American Cryptogram Association and haswritten extensively on cryptographic topics. He was Head Cryptographerfor the movie The Red Machine, which was given a thumbs up by RogerEbert. Now retired, he lives in Silicon Valley and spends time with hisinterests: running, geocaching, guitar, cryptography, and, ofcourse,writing.
The Cliff Knowles Mysteries can be enjoyed byanyone who likes a good mystery novel, but geocachers especially enjoythe way geocaching is woven into some of the books. The author is anexperienced geocacher. He geocaches under the name THE RAT. He has found over 2500 caches and has placed over 90 caches. CLIFF KNOWLES IS BACK, BUT WILL HE SURVIVE?

Like the author's first book, I thought this one starts in a deliberate fashion, as the scenario develops, facts are discovered, and all the players are introduced. In this sense, it seems a lot like a police procedural--just like the author's first novel. In Cached Out, however, the storyline is completely different, the cast is far fewer, and the reader doesn't need a "look-up" table to see who is who.
Cliff has retired from the FBI, but that doesn't mean his investigatory skills are retired--they are as sharp as ever. The story unfolds in a logical fashion, as Cliff Knowles, main character (but also main suspect) gathers evidence to help the investigating team (and get them off his back!) Along the way, we meet with some bunglers, but also some capable agents and rangers. This book seems to have fewer bunglers.
Readers who are geocachers will especially like the various caching puzzles that are introduced, as well as the hiking locales on the San Francisco peninsula. This was especially interesting for me, since I am a regular hiker/geocacher in the Open Space Preserves, near where the crimes take place. On several occasions, I opened up a satellite view of the area to spot the various trails and roads mentioned in the book. (What the heck is Saratoga Toll Road Trail? Do they charge hikers a toll?)
The last 100 pages are really excellent. I deliberately slowed down my reading, so as to fully appreciate the story.
As with the first novel, the writing style is excellent. The author has obviously spent a large amount of time perfecting the writing craft--especially the dialogue, which is no mean feat. f you've ever read an early novel, where the author struggles with dialogue, you will know what I mean. There's none of this, "He said," then "She said," then "Bob replied," etc. The author smoothly blends the conversation so that you know who is talking. I suspect readers don't realize how difficult a task that is for a writer. This cannot possibly be only the author's second book. I am willing to bet there are a ton of short stories out there, in which he perfected the writer's craft. (Or some outstanding editor.) On a minor note, I appreciate the wide-margin formatting, so that the reader doesn't have to yank the book wide open to see the words near the inside margins.
Atkinson's descriptions are often very witty. Here's my favorite line in the book: "She took a leap of faith--and a corporeal one also." (Is this the lawyer in Atkinson coming out?)
A really excellent read. I look forward to reading Cliff's next adventure. Back with the FBI, or maybe a P.I.? The author isn't saying, but I have my suspicions.

Good story, good geocaching. Great book.

When I read a novel based on a hobby, my two questions are: "Is it a good story?" and "are the references to the hobby (geocaching, in this case) accurate?" A good story with bad geocaching is no better than a bad story with good geocaching, so it has to be good on both counts to get high marks from me (a bad story with bad geocaching is simply pointless).
Regardless of whether one is a geocacher or not, this novel stands on its own. The story is fast paced, the situations plausible, and the characters are interesting. It is a real page turner. It is, truth be told, one of the few books I have read (and I read a lot) that I did not want to put down. When I got to the end, I wanted more. If it was a TV show I'd already be checking the schedules waiting for the next season to start.
Geocaching does play a central part in the story, and it is intricately woven into both the plot and the character development. However, the geocaching is explained enough that I believe someone who is not familiar with geocaching would have no problem following the story, in the same vein as one does not have to be a lawyer to understand or enjoy a John Grisham novel.
That leaves us with the question of the accuracy of the geocaching. I am an avid geocacher, and I am also rather pedantic. Inaccuracies in caching descriptions quickly cause me forget about the story and concentrate on the errors. As a result, accuracy is vital for my enjoyment of a geocaching themed book. Fortunately there is good news on this front.
The author of Cached Out is a geocacher himself, and it shows. His depictions of geocaching are, essentially, perfect. Both descriptions of geocaching itself, and how the geocachers think, are exactly what I expect based on my extensive experience with geocaching and the geocaching community. Many times during the story, and especially during the climax, I thought "yep, that is *exactly* how a geocacher would react." As a result I found that the geocaching in the novel allowed me to get more enjoyment out of the story. Think of it like a delicious gravy spread over Thanksgiving dinner.
So, in summary, as a murder mystery novel it is a good read, fun, quick paced, and enjoyable. As a geocaching themed novel it is even better. It would make a fantastic stocking stuffer for the geocacher on your Christmas list.

Knows his geocaching

Pleasantly surprised to know that geocaching was accurately portrayed and played a large part in the story line. Also pleased that this was a good mystery as well. Started reading it just because I'm a geocacher and ended up hooked on the storyline. I'd definitely recommend this book.
