Crucial to our survival

Never has there been a greater need for our children to know they have dads. Our prisons, orphanages, rescue centres and drug rehab facilities are overflowing and the stats show, if we had a stronger fathering ethic, this would be very different. Being a dad is difficult, we need wisdom, advice, courage and others to walk with. This book provides invaluable insight and encourages the men who have fathered children to do more than just pass their genetic material on but to leave a generation of kids that will grow up and make meaningful contributions to the fabric of society. Every child longs to be able to say, "That's my dad!" As men we owe it to our children and our world to invest in our fathering! A great read in a crucial area of one of societies greatest failures.

Practical advice from the heart

My reaction on reading the first section of this book was guilt at the comparison of my relatively modest competencies as a father contrasted with those of the author! However, this was rapidly transformed into feelings of admiration and respect for Mr Wilkinson who has written a compelling book on fatherhood. He provides frank and heartfelt narrative on fathering two children in difficult circumstances, with each emotional moment providing the reader with insight and advice. The second section highlights "dadverbs", a selection of fatherly behaviours that are both insightful and practical. The third section provides useful and helpful self-examination questionnaires which will surely assist all fathers to improve their skills. Throughout the book, Mr Wilkinson weaves the themes of the global decline in good fathering practice and the absence of fathers in many families, surely cause for concern for all of us. Well done Mr Wilkinson! I only wish you'd published this when my children were toddlers rather than teenagers!

Purposeful Fatherhood

I thoroughly enjoyed reading "The Dad Book". It is about purposeful fatherhood. It's real and it will challenge you. It is written in a way that says it like it is without being judgmental. It explores the insecurities men have and challenges they experience; often limiting their capacity to be great fathers. As much as it would have been easy to discuss psychological and other technical or research-based doctrines or to base a book such as this one on personal opinion and experience only, Craig writes about getting back to basics in a way that will resonate with all men; not just some men. He highlights the need to get back to the fundamental principles of authentic manhood that shaped great nations in order to deal with the issues in today's challenged world where mediocrity is widely tolerated and values compromised too easily at the expense of the next generation. He understands and compassionately relates to men who have in many ways lost their direction, either knowingly or unknowingly. In this book he shares examples from his own experience, hard lessons he had to learn, with refreshing openness and authenticity. Clearly a man who is passionate about being a father, who loves his children and who is on a mission to share these fundamental lessons with men all over the world. This is definitely one of the best "being a great dad" books I have read.
