About the Author
When Katherine Anne Porter left her home state of Texas for New York, she brought with her the hard edge of a Western pioneer. Passionate and intelligent, it was this edge more than anything that made her name as a writer. Despite her self-imposed exile from her home and Southern background, Porter used this distance as a means of coming to terms with the memories she sought to escape. Born in India Creek, Texas in 1890, Katherine Anne Porter lost her mother at the age of two. Raised primarily by her paternal grandmother, Porter became strong and self-reliant at an early age. Both the loss of her mother and her father's subsequent neglect had a lasting effect on Porter-making her incredibly attentive to the harsh realities of the human endeavor. At age fifteen she married John Henry Koontz, the first of four husbands. Throughout her entire life she would continue to have passionate affairs marked by dramatic and vicious break-ups. She spent her early twenties moving from Texas to Chicago and back, working as an actress, a singer, and, later, a secretary. In 1917, after a battle with tuberculosis, Porter took a job as a society columnist for the Fort Worth CRITIC. Two years later she moved to Greenwich Village, where she began to work seriously as a fiction writer. Supporting herself with journalism and "hack" writing, Porter published her first story in CENTURY magazine. Though CENTURY provided her with a good sum for the story, Porter was rarely to return to popular magazine publishing, choosing instead the freedom of little magazines. A perfectionist concerned with controlling every word of her stories, Porter gained a name for her flawless prose. Often concerned with the themes of justice, betrayal, and the unforgiving nature of the human race, Porter's writings occupied the space where the personal and political meet. In 1930 her first book, FLOWERING JUDAS, was published by Harcourt Brace. Though a masterly collection of short stories, it met with only modest sales. It was not until almost ten years later that she published her second book, a collection of three short novels, PALE HORSE, PALE RIDER. She followed this in 1944 with THE LEANING TOWER AND OTHER STORIES. Concerning herself overtly with the rise of Nazism, Porter was able to further investigate the dark side of the average person. It was not, however, until nearly twenty years later that she was able to address the topic in greater depth

Encouraging, Inspiring and So Much More!

There aren't many books that hold my attention enough to read straight through with little to no breaks but this book is one of the few that has! Randi is transparent about her feelings and perceptions of her singleness and how her perception changed as God moved in her life. Even though our stories are different I related on so many levels and some things that I was unsure about became clearer. Saved, Single & Sane has encouraged me to embrace my singleness, continue to seek the Lord in all that I do and enjoy life until I am found.

Even though this book is marketed for the single ladies, I believe it will also bless single fellas as well.

Being a young woman in college there are a lot of temptations & this definitely has helped me to fight through the things that come my way & to keep walking & waiting on me to develop before I get into a relationship with someone who could better me & so I won't take away but give & strengthen our relationship.

Didn't answer the question I bought the book for

My older references are in storage and I thought it would be neat to have a c++ ref on my kindle. It says reference and the reviews are good, so I bought it.

I wanted to be reminded of how to use variable numbers of parameters for macro defines. Forget whether this is a good idea. It's a language feature and I want to know how it works.

#define with parameters is handled in one paragraph which doesn't even include the possibility of multiple parameters, let alone any details. Given this, I was curious to see if there was any discussion of the continuation-line functionality in the preprocessor. Nope. Not there.

I'm sure this is a wonderful c++ primer as the other reviews indicate. My spot check demonstrates that this is in no way a complete reference.

Even if you don't like a coding style, completeness allows you to read the code of others.

So I'm out $28 bucks and my question isn't answered. oh well.

"Complete Reference" far from complete

I'm a developer who understands basic C++ concepts. I bought this book so that I could understand more advanced features of the language, and I've found it sorely lacking. Most topics are covered briefly and show only extremely obvious examples, which are not helpful in understanding the mechanisms involved.

This book may have some value for programmers new to C++, but its claim to be a "complete reference" is a wild exaggeration.

Great as a tutorial and as a reference

Herbert Schildt's "C++: The Complete Reference" is a gargantuan tome indeed. It fully covers the C++ syntax, and gives useful, working examples that demonstrate each of the language's features. If you're a professional (or hobbyist) working on a project and need to quickly look up how to use some part of C++ syntax, then this book is absolutely perfect. If you're a developer who has spent his/her life working in C and want to (or need to!) learn C++, then you'll find this book's content well organized and you'll be able to find what you need instantly.

Also, this book seems as though it could function as a tutorial for the complete beginner. Now, I didn't learn C++ from this book initially, so I can't really speak from experience, but the book DOES cover the entire syntax and it does so in an unpretentious and very clear manner. The only thing that it's missing for newbies is exercises -- but if you're really serious, you'll make up your own little tasks, or try to extend/modify the examples.

I program video games as a hobby and have used this as a reference countless times in various projects. I've obviously bought other reference books ("C++ in a Nutshell", and Stroustrup's tome), but I find that this book is my most used and most beloved reference.

So, if you're looking for a clear, easy to understand reference on C++, I reccomend this tome. If you're a true C++ neophyte, then perhaps you should purchase this book along with Schildt's "C++: A beginner's Guide" or "C++ from the Ground Up" (also by Schildt).

J. Brent Bill is a Quaker minister, photographer, retreat leader, and author. The basic value of simplicity in Quakerism belies its complexity. How can a denomination with no dogma or creed, sometimes without a minister, be understood and practiced? A Quaker minister, Brent Bill, examines the foundational values and practices of Quakerism and poses the important questions that people must ultimately find answers to from within. If you have a friend who needs to remember how to laugh, is graduating from high school, retiring, taking himself too seriously or not seriously enough, give him Life Lessons from a Bad Quaker. And read it yourself.

Do you know any bigots? J. Brent Bill will gently but firmly admonish them while he makes them look in the mirror at their faults in a cheerful way.

Give yourself this book if you'd like to learn more about the history and practice of the Friends without being scolded for what you don't know.

The worst feature of the little Life Lessons book is that it comes to an end. I listened to it on my Kindle and I wanted the voice to keep talking to me about how to live. I promise you the book will help you make it through each day or give you a pleasant thought before you sleep at night.

For about 200 pages it's a bit costly, but it's worth it. Get your hands on this one and pass it to a friend.

A wonderful primer for Quakerism

This delightful little book is a great introductory read for anyone who is interested in exploring what being a Quaker means. J. Brent Bill explores the tenets of the faith with warmth and humor. Some topics covered in this book: stillness and quiet, living simply, integrity, being a peacemaker and having humor about being Quaker. I was also especially appreciative of the appendices that gave wonderful Quaker hymn suggestions as well as general resources and even a list of famous Quakers throughout history. You won't be disappointed by this little gem as J. Brent Bill takes you his insights and observations about what it means to be a "bad" Quaker Quaker as he classifies himself (which I find a little hard to believe since he is so delightful!) Check it out. You won't be disappointed!

About the Author
Heike P. Schuchmann geb. 1965 in Bruchsal, studierte Chemieingenieurwesen an der Universit�t Karlsruhe (TH) mit der Vertiefungsrichtung Lebensmittelverfahrenstechnik und promovierte im gleichen Fachgebiet. Von 1994 bis 1997 war sie bei der BASF AG im Bereich der Prozessentwicklung in den Gebieten Emulgieren, Zerkleinern, Agglomerieren und Mischen t�tig. Bis 2000 leitete sie die Gruppe 'extrusion technologies' am Nestl� Product Technology Center, Orbe, CH. 2001 �bernahm sie in Nachfolge von Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h. c. Walter E. L. Spie� die Leitung des Institutes f�r Verfahrenstechnik an der heutigen BFEL (Bundesforschungsanstalt f�r Ern�hrung und Lebensmittel), Karlsruhe. Seit 2004 ist sie als Nachfolgerin von Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Helmar Schubert Professorin f�r Lebensmittelverfahrenstechnik an der Universit�t Karlsruhe (TH) mit den Arbeitsgebieten Disperse Systeme, Extrusion, Steriltechnik sowie alternative Verfahren zur Haltbarmachung von Lebensmitteln.

Harald Schuchmann geb. 1959 in Wiesbaden, studierte Chemieingenieurwesen an der Universit�t Karlsruhe (TH) mit den Schwerpunkten Lebensmittel- und Mechanische Verfahrenstechnik. Nach seiner Promotion bei von Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Helmar Schubert auf dem Gebiet der Strahlagglomeration von Instantprodukten arbeitete er von 1993 bis 2001 als Gruppenleiter f�r die Firma Nestl� in Deutschland, der Schweiz und Frankreich. Hauptarbeitsgebiete waren die Produkt- und Prozessentwicklung von Getr�nkepulvern (Kaffee, Kakao, Milch, Tee u. �.). Seit 2001 ist er als selbstst�ndiger Ingenieur beratend vor allem auf dem Gebiet der Prozessauslegung f�r Texturierungsverfahren und in der Weiterbildung (Projektmanagement) t�tig.

A remarkable book

This is a remarkable book in the distinguished Blackwell Great Minds series by a first-rate Plato scholar. The author provides careful analysis of key arguments in the dialogues, and offers an interpretation of them that persuasively shows the validity of even Socrates's most extraordinary claims, e.g., that human beings are living their lives "upside down" and doing the opposite of what they ought; that no harm can befall a good man; or, as the author restates it, "single-minded devotion to righteousness, done as a holy sacrament, is ideal life." He takes Socrates' hearing of a divine voice and consequent divine mission seriously, and says his goal is "to lead philosophers to religion, to lead the religious to philosophy, and to lead those who are neither to both." Occasionally, and increasingly toward the end of the book, he illustrates Socrates' point by quoting Jesus as well as great spiritual teachers from other traditions. But there is nothing tendentious, no apologetics here, just well-founded exegesis and argumentation. Recommended for the serious student of philosophy.

About the Author
Dr. Ruwantissa Abeyratne has worked in the field of aviation law and management for over thirty years and is currently Senior Legal Officer the International Civil Aviation Organization. He holds the degree of doctor of civil laws (DCL) from McGill University, the degree of doctor of philosophy (Ph.D) from the University of Colombo, the degree of master of laws (LL.M) from Monash University, Victoria, Australia, and the degree of bachelor of laws (LL.B) from the University of Colombo. He has published 22 books and over 400 leading journal articles on international law and Aerospace law, in addition to many papers presented to conferences. Some of his latest books are Aviation in Crisis, Aviation and the Environment, Aeropolitics, Aeronomics and Law, Air Navigation Law, Aviation Security Law, Space Security Law, Airport Business Law and Aviation and the Carbon Trade. Dr. Abeyratne is a Fellow of both the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. He is also a member of the British Association of Aviation Consultants and the International Law Association, in which he serves as member of both the Association's International Trade Law Committee and Space Law Committee. He is a founder member of the Montreal Branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society and Chairman of the Air Law Group of the Branch.
