The Best of The Simpsons Books

From an academic perspective, David Arnold et al's book is amusing, but too "lite" on theory at times, with non-media-scholars coming to grand conclusions that media scholars in the eighties came to. Mark Pinsky's book is a very amusing book, written with such a love for the program that it's delightful, but I didn't feel it enlightened me about The Simpsons as much as it made a strong argument for and defense of its morality and ethics (a book that's a must for Simpsons-dislikers). Steven Keslowitz's book is atrocious, poorly written, and not worthy of a single purchase. Which leaves this book as the best serious treatment of The Simpsons.

Why not the 5th star? Well, several of the contributors start to wander away from the topic, and I also feel that if you're going to analyze the media in an academic way, you need to secure a few more articles from actual media scholars. This oversight is evident in the lack of essays looking at The Simpsons from some form of structural or economic standpoint. The book is more humanities-based than social sciences, and that's a pity.

However, it still examines some important issues, and thus digs under the surface of the text in a convincing and thoughtful way. Alberti's introduction is arguably the best "article" in the book, as he positions the program brilliantly, and gives a great sense of the ways in which The Simpsons might be doing something special that very few if any other programs in television history have. I found the essays thought-provoking, and a lot more dense than other writing on The Simpsons.

So, while I could see how a fan of the show who wants to keep viewing it as light and mellow wouldn't enjoy this book or appreciate it, if you actually want to engage with the program and its politics on a deeper level, this book does an admirable job. Very good stuff, some essays especially excellent

I am a Simpsons geek; I admit it freely, and with pride. I have greedily grabbed up all of the academically-slanted studies of the show that have trickled out over the last few years, including studies on philosophy and religion in the show. They have all been interesting, but flawed. Finally, in Leaving Springfield, I get a book that does more than simply summarize plot lines I already know, and then run off its own agenda. This book analyzes episodes, and provides new insights by interpreting them through a variety of critical perspectives. The most interesting essay, for example, examines The Simpsons as a bridge between so-called "high" and "low" art, combining the "lowbrow" media of television and animation with literary "highbrow" irony, self-reflexivity, and wit. Other essays examine the way the show uses ethnic stereotypes to undermine social racism, gay life on The Simpsons, and The Simpsons' place in the animation tradition. All the essays are brought together under a broad topic: can a show like The Simpsons, which is owned and televised by a multinational conglomerate, still be a legitimate social satire?
The writing is academic, and at times a bit dry, but if you like The Simpsons, you'll love this book. Even if you aren't a big fan, I still recommend it; books like Leaving Springfield are becoming more and more important, because as visual media continues to take over print, we need to start looking seriously at television for the few (albeit very few) works of true art it offers. This book is a bit hard to find, but well worth the search.

Subversive-minded readers only!

The reviewer who complained that this book is just academic twaddle seemingly couldn't possibly be a true Simpsons fan. This book is an excellent entree into the culture theory of ideological poisoning that is at the heart of all media--conservative, right-wing media--in America today. (Not that there is any viable liberal left-wing media in America today, regardless of what the GOP would have you believe.) Every image you see coming at you from TV, movies, video games, etc. is designed to suck you into the consumerist ideological trap that the writers of the Simpsons are dedicated to making you question. The Simpsons as a cartoon is show to be highly worthy of penetrating critique, something that most viewers aren't bothered with attempting. The first two chapters of the book, both of which examine consumerism/capitalism's failings and how the Simpsons manage to exploit those failings, are the highlights of the book. If you just want a listing of movie references, read the highly entertaining episode guides (I own all three to date), but you want to understand how the film references are used to provide further dissident and subversive layers to the show, buy this book. The only quibble: It fails to entertain the question of how oppositional--to consumer culture--the Simpsons can be when it produces billions of dollars of revenue from merchandise.

I love Lana Harvey

I received the first book for free from a website similar to bookbub.com and I am so grateful to have found it. I have found I truly enjoyed reading this series. It has been a long time since I found a book series I am so into. I finished reading all 6 books in less than 3 weeks. Ms. Roquet has written about the afterlife in a very delightful, down to earth way. I am very much looking forward to her next book in this series and looking forward to checking out a few of her other books.

Cute series, keeps you hooked. Lunchtime read for me, a diversion from work, lots of fantastical situations and interesting characters. I am enjoying the books. 4 stars, repeating basic info in each book is overkill for the series reader.

Highly recommended. Shame about the price

The first part of this book is a lucid introduction to classical differential geometry from the Frenet formulas to Riemannian manifolds, via Gauss curvature, metric coefficients, connections, geodesics and the curvature tensor, with many well-motivated examples and exercises. If you have a working knowledge of basic linear algebra and multivariable calculus you should have no trouble with any of this.
The remainder (two-thirds of the book) provides one of the most readable introductions to special and general relativity that I have ever come across. Because of the geometric approach, modest prerequisites and limited space, there is no treatment of relativistic mechanics, electrodynamics or the 'matter' field equations, and actually no formal development of tensor calculus. Within these constraints, it is amazing what the author does manage to cover. You will be led easily through the vacuum field equations, Schwarzschild solution, perihelion precession, light-bending ...
If this book had been twice the length - more comprehensive but in the same style - it could have been a classic. As it is, it does not seem to be anywhere near as widely used as it deserves to be .. Surely this is a prime candidate for a ..Dover edition? Until then, get it from the library.

A very accessible book - well worth a look

This book comprises two sections. The first section develops the tools of classical differential geometry with a thorough treatment of 2D surfaces embedded in a 3D space. First and second fundamental forms are introduced and their relationships analysed. This leads into the usual realms - Christoffel symbols, connections and the Riemann Curvature Tensor.A very readable account of Gauss's Theorem Egregium is presented - it's great!. Finally, more abstract manifolds are presented.I worked thoroughly through the first half of this book.There are many good exercises.This volume is cited a number of times In Gregory L. Naber's 'Spacetime and Singularities'- a more difficult book. I found Faber's volume of real help when studying the latter(which has loads of exercises and problems but no hints/partial solutions at all). The second section is an introduction to Special and General Relativity. I have to confess I did not study this half as I had already covered the material presented in this section elsewhere. The first half of the book gives a very good feel for curved space and is fitting preparation for the second half if the material presented there is new to you.. A good little book for independent study.

I've read (attempted to read) a number of books on general relativity, including the elementary texts (Schutz, others), the introductions for mathematicians (Lee), books on tensors, web intros, .... and the only one that I've been able gain any traction with is this book. And, I'm not exactly unprepared, as I have a MS in math and have worked a number of years as an engineer, much of the time doing inertial nav and other presumably related work. Yet, the other GR books have completely baffled me. Warning ... if you start a book and there is a long section on tensors .... look out... or you'll soon be playing a game of 'find the pea (relativity)' and it will be under plenty of thick mattresses (tensor analysis being but one). This book develops all the machinery using a 2-d surface embedded in 3-d. This is the way to go, no question in my mind. There is a degree of concreteness to counter the endless poliferation of new symbols and notation. Then there is a good (could have been better see the Calculus Without Tears web page) intro to special relativity. And then .... before you've finished breakfast ... field equations... which I'm working on now. If not for this book, I might have given up on my latest hobby, GR.

For example ... spacetime is curved? Yes. Hard to visualize? No. Throw a ball ... look at the arc .... there it is. Calculate the curvature? Easy... no tensors, field equations, differentials. Of course, even Faber waits till page 274 for this little demonstration, and he could have put it on page 1... still, it's there.

Not worth the time or the money.

I was required to purchase this textbook as a part of my Pediatric Nursing course. At first glance, this text seems as though it would be a simple way to learn and understand the basics of pediatric nursing. Boy is that first glance wrong. The bullet-point format is cumbersome to read and difficult to discern the most important aspects of each section. The first several chapters (Growth, Development, and Trends in Pediatric Nursing) are all clear and well laid out, at least well laid out for the bullet-points. The remainder of the book is extremely confusing to the reader. Each chapter has multiple typos, content errors, and confusing ways of presenting information. The authors used multiple sources within each chapter, with each source contradicting each other. The end result is one page saying x, y, and z while the very next page will say a, b, and c. There are also some major flaws with the presentation of material, especially with the discussion on organ procurement in the pediatric patient (author reports that pediatric patient are brought to the OR without family where their organs are removed from their body causing the patient's death). My university switched to this textbook this semester and has already decided that this textbook is not worth assigning for a second. If you are looking for a pediatric nursing textbook, I would purchase Wong's Essentials of Pediatric Nursing. Many of my classmates have switched to this textbook to understand the material and are finding the layout and content to flow much better and the content to be much easier to understand. More importantly, Wong's is accurate.

Horrible book! Too many mistakes! Lacks information!

I generally don't write reviews, but for this book...I had to. It's just absolute garbage. Lacks critical detail, just bullet points, it's not a real textbook. It's like a review book with less information than it should have. And the amount of mistakes...oh boy! "Provide immunziation for HIV." THERE'S NO SUCH THING YET! There's just so much wron about this book that it's ridiculous. Better off using Google.

This book is horrible. You may think the bullet format would make it more straightforward, but actually it has very limited information. I have yet to read about a topic in this book and not be left with questions. I assume most people purchase the book as a requirement for school, but schools should really reconsider. This book is worthless.

Angry tears welled in Elizabeth's eyes as she recalled last week, when everything had started. It had all happened so innocently. A harmless flirtation with Devon in chem lab that had grown into a full-blown love affair. She had never meant to hurt Todd, but she hadn't been able to control her heart.

When her twin sister, Jessica, had found out about Elizabeth and Devon, she'd freaked. Jessica had wanted Devon for herself and had seen an opportunity to get revenge on Elizabeth by setting up Courtney Kane with Todd. Courtney--tall and curvaceous, with shiny mahogany hair and eyes the color of smoke was one of the biggest snobs Elizabeth had ever met. A student at posh Lovett Academy, Courtney had tried to steal Todd from Elizabeth before and had been only too happy to try to steal him again.

At first Elizabeth had felt a twinge of jealousy when she learned about Todd and Courtney. But then she had reasoned that if she was seeing Devon, Todd should be able to see someone too. When she had asked Todd to meet her at the Dairi Burger this afternoon, it had been to tell him how happy she was that he'd found someone. She had wanted to tell Todd it was OK for him to give Courtney the beautiful silver ring he'd bought for the anniversary of Elizabeth's first published story.

Elizabeth grimaced as she recalled the hopeful, pained look in Todd's eyes when he'd given her the ring. It had been a lovely gesture. Ever since Elizabeth was a little girl, it had been her dream to be a writer. Getting her first article published in Sweet Valley High's student newspaper, the Oracle, had been a major event for her. But because she had started seeing Devon, she hadn't thought it was right to accept Todd's anniversary gift. Still, she cared about Todd. She had wanted to tell him that at the Dairi Burger--to ask him if they could still be friends.

"But Jessica had other plans," Elizabeth mumbled to herself as she paced. She and Todd had talked for a long while, a conversation full of feelings and memories that had reminded her of why she loved Todd in the first place. She'd begun to wonder if maybe Todd hadn't been right for her all along. As they had become more comfortable they had started to talk about the past week. Eventually she and Todd had put two and two together and realized Jessica had been behind the whole Courtney scheme.

It was at that moment that Jessica, Devon, and Courtney had stormed into the Dairi Burger. When Devon had seen Elizabeth with Todd, he'd lost it, and so had Todd. Devon, in a rage, had told Todd to leave Elizabeth alone. Todd, believing he was losing his one chance to get Elizabeth back, had dropped to his knees and proposed to her, offering her the silver ring to seal their engagement.

After that the situation had truly spiraled out of control. A shoving match had begun, and before Elizabeth had known what was happening, Devon and Todd had started fighting like a couple of Neanderthals. Elizabeth had begged someone to stop them--had even gotten bruised herself trying to break up the fight. It was humiliating and horrible. How could both of them be such immature animals? she had asked herself as she ran from the Dairi Burger. Todd, who was always so warm and considerate, Devon with his sensitive nature and brilliant mind.

Elizabeth flung out her hand angrily, knocking a slew of Todd's cards to the floor. It's all Jessica's fault, she told herself. If she hadn't brought Devon and Courtney to the Dairi Burger, this would never have happened. Jessica had done some pretty sleazy scheming in the past, but nothing this hateful.

Tears welled in Elizabeth's eyes, blurring the gifts and cards. She could never forgive Jessica for this--never! The tears came harder, and she flung herself onto the couch. Upstairs she could hear the shower running in the bathroom she and Jessica shared. The thought of Jessica going nonchalantly about her daily life after what she had done just made Elizabeth cry harder.

Burying her head in a throw pillow, Elizabeth wept her heart out. Suddenly through her sobs she heard the phone begin to ring. Her parents were out. She and Jessica were alone in the house, and Jessica would never hear the phone over the shower.

Elizabeth considered just letting the voice mail system take the call. But what if it's important and the caller hangs up before the voice mail answers? she thought. Swiping at her tears, she ran to the hallway and grabbed the receiver. "Hello?" she said in a shaky voice.

"Liz, finally!" It was Devon. "I've been trying to reach you all afternoon," he said. "I needed to tell you--"

Elizabeth cut him off. "There's nothing you can tell me I don't already know," she cried angrily. Then she slammed the receiver down, her tears breaking loose in a cascade of confusion and pain.

Sobbing, she ran upstairs toward her room. Jessica was just coming out of the bathroom. Her wavy blond hair was wrapped in a thick pink towel. She was wearing a fluffy white bathrobe and matching slippers, smiling contentedly as if everything was absolutely fine. Elizabeth shot her a furious look. "I hope you're happy" she yelled. Then she ran into her bedroom, slamming the door behind her before she threw herself across the bed.

Liz made her decision

I thought that it was really sad that Liz didn't take Todd back and I'm glad that Devon,finally, saw how much Liz loves Todd but why did Liz choose to be alone than to keep Todd I mean Todd is so sweet ok so I admit it that sending flowers,candy and cards is like buying back the relationship but it is also thoughtful and nice so why did Liz choose what she did I mean everyone knows that Liz can't live without Todd and be alone so in SVU she is but they are still friends in it and it was Todd who said that he didn't think that he could be anyone's boyfriend in SVU but this is different Todd can't do what he wants right like play basketball but hey no one said love and relationship is easy.not to mention life it self.

An enjoyable book to read.

I enjoed reading this book because it shows how a girl caught between two guys she cares about feels. It also makes you realize how the guys feel in this situation. although some of the things that happen to the characters is pretty incredible, it just adds to the excitement.

Loved William's "gentle" Dom

Touch My Heart is the second book in the Heart & Soul series by Paloma Beck. It tells the story of William and Aubrey, this time from William’s POV. I wasn’t’ aware that there was a first book from Aubrey’s POV, so I experienced their story for the first time with Touch My Heart. While I will now plan to go back and read Hold My Hand to learn more about Aubrey, reading Touch My Heart did not leave me feeling like there were gaps – or at least not like there were gaps that made the story incomplete.

William is a dominant, and he’s been content with playmates to satisfy his tendencies. But when William sees Aubrey, he not only recognizes in her the spirit of a natural submissive, but there’s something about Aubrey that captivates him in a way he’s never experienced, and William starts to think about the kind of domestic discipline arrangement like his parents have – a permanence – with Aubrey as is partner.

I loved the chemistry between these two characters. Aubrey’s nature is submissive, but she also has deep-seeded emotional wounds. She trusts William, but her own insecurities keep her somewhat closed off and reticent when it comes to William. Despite his dominant nature and his sometimes frustration with Aubrey for failing to recognize her own beauty and worth, William is both tender and patient (even in punishment) as he nurtures Aubrey’s inner-submissive.

I must warn the reader that the story ends on a rather shocking cliffhanger. I kept watching my percent meter and was starting to become a little concerned as I hit the 90% mark, as it was clear that the story was really developing and moving along nicely and couldn’t possibly conclude so quickly. Then, BAM! She did it. Paloma Beck ends Touch My Heart without warning. The conclusion of the series – Heal My Soul – is scheduled for release this summer.

better then the first

I got this book from the author for an honest review.

First I must begin this review with a SCREAM to the author....Shaking my fist....I yell..".PALOMA!!! you can't leave me hanging like this!!!!".....

Ok now with the review.....So I fell head over heals with William when I read the first book in this series. He is a Dominant who knows what he wants and he wants Aubrey. The first book of the series is all Aubrey's POV. We learn why she is so insecure and how William get her over it. This book is Williams POV. We see him grow more and more in love with Aubrey as she grows more and more confident in herself. There is overlap between the books but I loved it. I remembered the scenes and where Aubrey's head was so it is cool to see William's take on everything.

This book does take you out past book one to see William and Aubrey finally admitting their love for each other. I will admit to tears at that point. We, the reader, knows how they feel but to finally see it.....priceless.......

William finally gets to take his little elf home to meet his parents. no shock that they adore her!! She also is supportive of everything he is dealing with in terms of his mother...sniff sniff......I was glad when William got to finally talk to Aubrey's parent to see how AWFUL they are in regards to her.

I was so happy with the way this book was moving and grooving that when the last few pages are read I had to back track and re-read to make sure I read it right. I was GASPING at this cliffhanger....I didn't see it coming and I will tell you that I cannot wait to see what the heck happens!!!

Touch my Heart is the second book in the Heart and Soul series and provides William’s side of the story to Hold my Hand. What was great about this story is how the author wove in a few BDSM 101 points for those readers who are not as acclimatized to the BDSM lifestyle, as well as defuse some of the immediate assumptions associated with it. This story is a perfect introduction to the BDSM world for those curious but cautious about BDSM related books.

William is a dominant that wants what his parents have; someone special to live in a domestic discipline relationship. His search is over now that he has discovered Aubrey, who he believes to be a natural submissive. William must slowly seduce and persuade Aubrey she needs him just as much as he has grown to need her.
Although there is the underlining need to dominate, William surprised me by how gentle and calming he was with Aubrey. *shivers* I could almost hear his deep velvet voice soothing me into submission.

I can not wait to find out if William and Aubrey can overcome their demons and begin to heal each other in the next installment!
